I was sorting props on the empty rehearsal hall stage when Brandon walked in. The room was dark, save for a single work light illuminating the dusty floorboards. He looked different. His usual swagger was gone, replaced by a nervous energy. He was no longer in his expensive costumes, but civilian clothes that seemed to hang awkwardly on him.

“Julian,” he said, his voice surprisingly soft. He approached the large table where I worked, the silence of the room amplifying his footsteps.

I looked up, my expression neutral.

He pushed a heavy, leather briefcase across the polished surface. It slid with a dull thud, stopping just short of my hands.

“This is for you,” he said, avoiding my gaze. His eyes darted around the empty room as if expecting someone to materialize.

I opened the briefcase. Inside, meticulously stacked, were bundles of crisp hundred-dollar bills. A staggering amount.

“$500,000,” Brandon clarified, his voice still low. “Cash. Tax-free. No questions asked.”

He looked at me then, his desperation clear. “Just sign a waiver. A simple document, stating you drop all claims against Brooks Media, against Victoria, against me.”

His voice rose slightly. “This whole thing is getting out of hand. My movie is on hold. Sponsors are bailing. This isn’t what my father wanted.”

He picked up a pre-printed form from the table, a generic legal release. “Sign this, and all of this goes away. You can pay your tuition, get a decent apartment. Leave all this behind.”

I closed the briefcase, the weight of the cash feeling sickeningly heavy.

“You really think,” I said, my voice calm despite the adrenaline coursing through me, “that a half-million dollars is worth 35% of a multi-million-dollar studio?”

Brandon flinched. “It’s more than you’d ever make. It’s a clean break. Take it, Julian.”

I pushed the briefcase back towards him. “My mother’s original trust document,” I began, my gaze locking onto his, “has a very specific provision.”

His brow furrowed. “What are you talking about?”

“Any documented attempt by a co-beneficiary,” I recited, remembering Marcus’s precise words, “to bribe an heir for the purpose of coercing a waiver of rights, results in an immediate, automatic forfeiture of the briber’s voting dividends and any personal claim to the estate.”

Brandon’s face went white. The color drained from his lips. He stumbled back, knocking over a lightweight prop chair with a clatter.

“What?” he stammered, his eyes wide with disbelief. “That’s not—”

I slid a small, silver pen across the table. “You’ve just offered a documented bribe, Brandon. In front of an un-redacted copy of the trust, which Marcus Drake just emailed to you. Your voting dividends, your claim to the empire you thought was yours, are now gone. Just like that.”

The silence in the rehearsal hall was deafening. Brandon stood frozen, staring at the briefcase, then at me. His attempt to buy me off had, in fact, just stripped him of his own inheritance.
