Julian’s smile faltered. His eyes flickered around the room. Heads bent over screens, fingers scrolling. The murmurs began, a low, rising tide of whispers.
Aunt Evelyn, standing gracefully by Julian’s side just moments before, subtly shifted. Her hand, which had rested lightly on his arm, dropped. She turned, her back ramrod straight, and slipped through a side door without a backward glance, disappearing into the night to protect her own estate.
