Her Husband Was the First on the Scene of a Horrific Murder — But His Alibi Hid a Chilling Truth She Would Uncover
The revelation of Thomas Vance’s “accident” galvanized me. My feigned normalcy became a razor-thin shield, barely concealing the frantic energy buzzing beneath my skin.
I was convinced now that Leo kept meticulous records, not just of his business dealings, but of his darker endeavors too. A man so calculated, so controlling, wouldn’t leave loose ends.
My search began in earnest, starting with his study. It was a place he guarded fiercely, a sanctuary where he conducted his business, both legitimate and illicit.
I waited until Leo was out, taking Daisy to her friend’s house. The moment the front door closed behind him, I moved.
The study was still, airless. The scent of leather and old paper hung in the air.
I started with his desk, meticulously examining every drawer, every file. I checked behind books, under decorative objects. Nothing.
My eyes scanned the built-in mahogany bookshelf that dominated one wall. It was filled with heavy tomes, law books, and business manuals.
I ran my hand along the spines, feeling for anything unusual, any give in the wood. I pressed against the panels, searching for a hidden mechanism.
Daisy, having finished her playdate early, burst through the front door, her laughter echoing through the silent house. She made a beeline for the study, giggling.
“Mama, can we play hide-and-seek?” she asked, her eyes bright with excitement. “I know the best hiding spot ever!”
My heart leaped into my throat. The timing was terrible. I quickly straightened a pile of papers.
“Not now, sweetie,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “Mama’s busy with work.”
But Daisy, ever persistent, was already scampering towards the bookshelf.
“But this is the best one!” she insisted, her small finger pointing to a section of the ornate paneling near the bottom. “Daddy showed me!”
My breath hitched. My eyes darted to where she was pointing.
She pressed a specific carving, a small, intricate rose, and with a soft click, a section of the bookshelf slid inward, revealing a small, dark recess. A hidden compartment.
My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drum. I had run my hand over that very spot countless times, missing it completely.
“See?” Daisy chirped, proud of her discovery. “Daddy said it was our secret.”
I swallowed hard, my gaze fixed on the compartment. It was empty. Completely, utterly bare.
A wave of disappointment, sharp and bitter, washed over me. I had been so close.
“What was in there, sweetie?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from revealing my frustration.
Daisy shrugged, her innocent face puzzled. “Daddy’s special box. It was a wooden one, with a lock.”
But it was gone. Leo had removed whatever he had stored there.
My mind raced. When had he cleared it out? Why?
The urgent suspense was almost unbearable. What had been in that locked wooden box? What crucial piece of evidence had I just missed?
My heart raced; I knew something *was* there. My hands instinctively reached into the empty space, feeling the smooth, cold wood.
He had removed it. He knew I was getting close.
The thought sent a shiver of fear down my spine. Had he sensed my growing suspicion? Had he seen my inquiries, my late-night searches?
What had Leo removed, and where was it now? The question hung heavy in the air, a terrifying puzzle.
Daisy, unaware of the gravity of the empty space, was already looking for a new hiding spot. Her innocent discovery had unveiled a deeper secret, and an even greater mystery.
I needed to find that box. I needed to know what Leo had been so desperate to hide.
The empty compartment was a stark reminder of how close I was to the truth, and how quickly it could slip away. The stakes were higher than ever.
