Her Husband Was the First on the Scene of a Horrific Murder — But His Alibi Hid a Chilling Truth She Would Uncover
I returned home from the park, my mind reeling with Mr. Henderson’s revelations. The specific details, the personal animosity he described, painted a chilling picture of Leo’s ruthlessness.
I found Leo in his study, engrossed in his computer. He looked up, his expression a carefully neutral mask.
“You’re back,” he said, without much warmth. “Everything alright with the girls?”
“Everything’s fine, Leo,” I replied, my voice tighter than I intended. I walked to the doorway of his study, my hands clasped together.
“I ran into Mr. Henderson at the park,” I began, watching his face closely.
A flicker, quick as a serpent’s tongue, crossed his features. It was gone almost instantly, replaced by a forced pleasantness.
“Oh, the old gardener?” he said, a dismissive wave of his hand. “Such a gossip. He’ll talk your ear off about everyone and everything.”
“He told me a lot about you and the Donovans,” I pressed, stepping further into the room.
His smile vanished. His jaw tightened, and his eyes, usually so charming, hardened into chips of ice.
“He told me you consistently harassed them to sell their property,” I continued, my voice gaining strength. “That you made incredibly low offers, even after they repeatedly refused.”
Leo’s carefully constructed composure began to crack. His face flushed crimson.
“He even saw you arguing with Mr. Donovan a week before they died,” I finished, letting the words hang in the air.
He exploded. The calm, collected facade shattered, revealing a raw, seething anger I had never witnessed directed at me.
“Are you serious, Clara?” he roared, pushing back from his desk so violently his chair scraped against the hardwood floor. “Are you really taking the word of a senile old busybody over mine?”
He stood, towering over me. His eyes blazed with a terrifying fury.
“You’re digging for dirt, aren’t you?” he spat, his voice laced with venom. “Betraying my trust, listening to every whisper, every ridiculous rumor.”
He stalked towards me, his presence menacing. I instinctively took a step back.
“You’re becoming delusional, Clara,” he snarled, his voice low and dangerous. “Obsessed with these fantasies. You’re losing your mind.”
He waved a dismissive hand, a gesture of profound contempt.
“First the tracker, which I explained was for your own good,” he continued, his voice rising again. “Now some old man’s embellished stories. Do you honestly think I would put my entire career, my entire life, at risk over a piece of land?”
He scoffed, a harsh, humorless sound.
“You’re embarrassing yourself,” he said, his words designed to wound. “And frankly, you’re embarrassing me. The detective already thinks you’re fragile.”
He took another step, closing the distance between us. His shadow fell over me.
“This is exactly what I warned you about,” he said, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. “Your anxieties are getting the better of you. You need to stop.”
He leaned in, his face inches from mine. The smell of his expensive cologne, usually comforting, now felt suffocating.
“Stop this ridiculous amateur detective work,” he hissed. “Or you will regret it.”
His eyes held a cold, unwavering threat. It wasn’t just gaslighting anymore; it was a direct, terrifying intimidation.
But for the first time, I saw through his performance. The rage was real, but it wasn’t genuine outrage at being falsely accused. It was the fury of a man whose carefully constructed lies were unraveling.
His words, meant to make me doubt myself, only solidified my resolve. He wasn’t upset because I was wrong; he was furious because I was getting too close to the truth.
The mask had slipped, just for a moment, revealing the monster underneath. The charming husband, the concerned neighbor, the successful developer – it was all a facade.
I stood my ground, though my heart hammered against my ribs. I wouldn’t back down.
I had seen the real Leo, the ruthless, cold-blooded man beneath the polished exterior. And I knew, with absolute certainty, that he was capable of anything.
His threat, chilling as it was, only made me more determined. I had to expose him, not just for the Donovans, but for Daisy, for our future.
The room felt charged with unspoken danger. The air was thick with the residue of his anger, a palpable warning.
But I would not be silenced. Not now.
