Her Husband Was the First on the Scene of a Horrific Murder — But His Alibi Hid a Chilling Truth She Would Uncover
The empty compartment felt like a mocking void, a testament to Leo’s cunning. My disappointment was quickly replaced by a desperate urgency.
Daisy, however, was already moving on, happily declaring a new “secret spot” behind the armchair. I watched her, a sudden thought sparking in my mind.
She had seen it. She had seen *something* in that compartment. Children often remembered the most mundane details, details that adults overlooked.
I knelt beside her, keeping my voice soft, trying not to alarm her.
“Daisy, can you tell Mama more about Daddy’s special box?” I asked, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face.
She paused her game, her brow furrowed in concentration. Her small finger went to her lips, a gesture of deep thought.
“It was a wooden box,” she repeated, “with a little lock. And Daddy had his special book inside.”
“A book?” I prompted, my heart starting to thump with renewed hope. “What kind of book, sweetie?”
She looked up at me, her eyes wide. “A small one. Leather, brown. He always wrote in it.”
My mind raced. A small, leather-bound notebook. Leo kept meticulously detailed records, I knew that.
“When did you see him put it in the secret box?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. This was the critical piece of information.
Daisy thought for a moment, her innocent face completely focused.
“Just a few days ago,” she said, her voice clear. “He was in here, and I came to get my doll. He was putting it in the box very fast.”
“Very fast?” I echoed, trying to imagine the scene. Leo, frantic, trying to hide something.
She nodded emphatically. “Yes! Like this!” She made a swift, pushing motion with her hand, demonstrating how Leo had quickly tucked the notebook away.
“And then he closed the secret door and told me it was ‘our special secret’,” she added. “He said not to tell anyone.”
Her innocent recollection was a flash of hope, a beacon in the darkness. Just days ago. He had rushed to hide it.
This meant it wasn’t some old, forgotten item. It was something current, something he had recently needed to conceal, something vital.
Daisy, in her innocent play, had seen the critical object disappear. She had inadvertently provided a vital clue to its contents and its recent removal.
“You’re a very smart girl, Daisy,” I said, pulling her into a tight hug. She giggled, squeezing me back.
My mind was already churning. If he had hidden a small, leather-bound notebook there just days ago, and then removed it, it meant he had moved it recently.
It meant he was actively trying to keep its contents hidden. It meant its contents were incriminating.
And if it was a notebook, something he “always wrote in,” it could contain anything: dates, names, plans. His thoughts, his motivations, perhaps even his chilling confessions.
The thought sent a shiver of dread and excitement through me. This was it. This was the trail I needed to follow.
The empty compartment was a red herring. The real treasure was the notebook, and Daisy had just given me a precious lead.
But where would he have moved it? A man as meticulous as Leo wouldn’t just discard it. He would hide it somewhere else, somewhere even more secure.
The house suddenly felt like a labyrinth, full of hidden corners and false fronts. But I now had a specific object to look for, a tangible piece of Leo’s hidden world.
I thanked Daisy again, my heart brimming with a mix of gratitude and fear. My daughter, unwittingly, was helping me expose her own father.
The urgency intensified. I needed to find that notebook, and I needed to do it before Leo realized Daisy had given away his secret.
