Her Husband Was the First on the Scene of a Horrific Murder — But His Alibi Hid a Chilling Truth She Would Uncover
The sound of Leo’s car engine cutting off in the driveway sent a jolt of pure terror through me. My hands, still clutching Leo’s confession, trembled violently.
“Mama, Daddy’s home!” Daisy chirped, oblivious, as she struggled to fit her teddy bear into the wooden box.
“Daisy, hide,” I whispered urgently, my voice hoarse. “Hide in your bed. Under the covers. Don’t make a sound.”
Her small face crumpled in confusion, but she obeyed, sensing the shift in my tone. She scurried to her bed, pulling the duvet over her head.
I quickly tucked the confession papers back into the box, slammed the lid shut, and shoved the entire box, along with Lily’s locket, into a small laundry bag. I kicked it under Daisy’s bed, hoping it wouldn’t be found.
The front door opened. I heard Leo’s footsteps, heavy and deliberate, in the hallway.
He walked into Daisy’s room, his eyes sweeping the space. He saw my pale, terrified face, the wild look in my eyes. He saw the disturbed floorboard in the closet, the broken lock on the wooden box, though I tried to conceal it with my body.
His eyes narrowed, hardening instantly. The practiced warmth vanished, replaced by a cold, knowing glare.
“What is going on here, Clara?” he asked, his voice low, deceptively calm. It was the calm before the storm.
I could feel his gaze burning into me, knowing I had discovered the truth. His face was a mask of restrained fury.
My mouth was dry. I couldn’t speak. I could only stand there, clutching the laundry bag, my heart pounding so hard I thought it would burst.
He took a step towards me. His hand, usually so gentle when touching mine, twitched, as if fighting an urge to seize me.
“You found it, didn’t you?” he stated, rather than asked. His eyes were like chips of ice.
I stared back at him, defiance warring with terror. I refused to let him see my fear.
A tense standoff ensued, filled with unspoken accusations. The air in the room crackled with an electric charge, a silent battle waged between us.
Before either of us could react further, his phone rang, a shrill, jarring sound in the heavy silence. He glanced at the caller ID, his expression momentarily distracted.
He answered, bringing the phone to his ear. I heard a muffled, frantic voice on the other end.
Leo listened for a moment, his face paling slightly. He spoke in hushed, urgent tones, his voice dropping to a near-whisper.
“A fire? At the Grandview site?” I heard him say, his voice laced with a carefully constructed panic. “Massive? Casualties?”
He paused, then added, “I’m on my way. Immediately. It’s a catastrophe.”
He ended the call, his face a picture of feigned distress. He looked at me, his eyes still holding that dangerous glint, but now overlaid with a new urgency.
“Clara,” he said, his voice strained. “There’s been a massive fire at one of my construction sites. It’s… it’s urgent.”
He didn’t wait for my response. He swiftly excused himself, already moving towards the door.
Within seconds, he was gone, disappearing in his car with a screech of tires. The silence he left behind was deafening, the lingering scent of his cologne now repulsive.
He was gone. Just like that.
I sank to the floor, my legs giving out. The laundry bag slipped from my grasp, the wooden box clattering faintly against the floorboards.
My hands covered my face, tears streaming down my cheeks. He knew. He had escaped.
Daisy emerged from under her covers, her small hand reaching for mine. “Mama? Is Daddy really busy?”
I pulled her into a tight embrace, burying my face in her soft hair. The horror of Leo’s confession, the chilling reality of his escape, pressed down on me.
He was gone. And I knew, with a sinking certainty, that this was just the beginning of his vanishing act.
