The quarterly HOA meeting at the Media Community Center was packed. Thirty suburban neighbors, including Arthur, sat in plastic chairs, listening to reports on recycling schedules and lawn care ordinances. Leo arrived late, Nina waiting nervously outside.
During the “new business” section, Leo walked to the front of the room. He plugged a portable projector into his laptop, Nina’s encrypted drive already loaded. The syndicate financial ledger, detailing millions in illicit payments and disguised clean-up operations, flashed onto the presentation screen. A hush fell over the room.
Leo pointed directly at Arthur, who was sitting in the third row, his face going pale. “This man,” Leo announced, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands, “is a syndicate fixer. He ordered my kidnapping, and he murdered my wife, Clara.”
Arthur stood up, visibly flushed, his hands shaking slightly. “This is preposterous!” he stammered, his usual smooth demeanor shattered. “Harmless accounting errors! A smear campaign!” He muttered apologies to the bewildered neighbors, then quickly fled the hall through a side fire door, leaving a ripple of murmurs and shocked whispers in his wake. His respectable suburban façade was crumbling.
