Leo’s luck held. A lone yellow cab, lights cutting through the rain, pulled over. He slumped into the back seat, giving Karen’s address. The driver barely glanced at his bloodied shirt.
Karen opened her door in shock, her eyes wide as she saw his state. She pulled him inside immediately, her face etched with concern. “Leo, what happened?”
He couldn’t speak, merely pointed to his side. She quickly helped him to the kitchen table, her hands gentle as she peeled back his torn shirt. “Oh, Leo,” she whispered, her fingers hovering over the angry, stitched lacerations. She fetched her first-aid kit, her movements efficient and caring.
While she carefully cleaned the wounds and began to apply bandage tape, Leo’s gaze drifted to the front window. A dark sedan, a newer model, idled across the street, its engine barely a murmur in the night. It felt too coincidental.
Then, a man in a crisp suit stepped out of a vehicle farther down the block. He walked directly up Karen’s porch steps, a thick envelope in his hand. Before Karen could react, he expertly taped an emergency legal notice to her front door. The paper was large, official, and its bold typeface screamed a warning. It named Leo as an escaped fugitive from a civil psychiatric holding claim.
