Chapter 21: One Year Later

The federal evidentiary hearing was packed. Every seat was taken, and journalists lined the walls. Marcus Danforth took the podium, a stack of files before him. He was a picture of quiet confidence, his presence commanding.

“Your Honor, members of the jury,” Danforth began, his voice clear and resonant. “The defense claims Ms. Lin-Kincaid is unreliable. They attempted to plant false medical records in local newsrooms, fabricated by Rachel Kincaid-Snyder’s campaign team, to discredit her testimony before this court.”

A gasp rippled through the gallery. Judge Evans fixed a steely glare on Ms. Caldwell, who paled.

“However,” Danforth continued, “the truth, unlike their manufactured narratives, leaves undeniable traces.” He picked up a folder. “We will now present those traces.”

He held up a large, laminated printout. “This is the acoustic signal telemetry, recovered and analyzed by Dr. Caleb Finch and Ms. Maya Lin-Kincaid.”

Danforth’s voice, calm and measured, filled the courtroom. He chronicled the timeline, minute by agonizing minute.

“At 8:17 PM on the night of the gala, Ms. Lin-Kincaid’s headset registered rhythmic Morse code tapping from inside ‘The Sentinel of Justice’ at 420 Hz.”

He displayed spectrograms on large screens, the distinct pattern undeniable. “We then hear the raspy breathing, human vocal tremors, and rhythmic, desperate fingernail scratching against plaster, also at 420 Hz.”

He played a cleaned audio clip. The faint, muffled sounds of struggle, followed by the choked utterance of “Julian,” filled the silent courtroom. Jurors leaned forward, some visibly recoiling.

“The internal transponder,” Danforth continued, “pinging for thirty hours. The 60Hz hum of American electricity, recorded 48 hours before the gala, proving local sealing, not overseas casting.”

He then moved to a different file, holding up a forensic report. “And here, members of the jury, is the official state DNA paternity match. Biological tissue extracted from inside the sculpture, belonging to Ethan Cross.”

He paused, letting the words sink in. “And that DNA matches Lieutenant Governor Julian Kincaid, with a 99.98% certainty. Ethan Cross was Julian Kincaid’s son.”

Julian, at the defense table, clenched his jaw, his knuckles white against the dark wood. Ms. Caldwell whispered frantically to him, but he seemed not to hear. Danforth’s methodical, undeniable presentation of the evidence was stripping away every layer of his carefully constructed lies, exposing the gruesome truth for all to see.
