Chapter 21: One Year Later

The front door to Maya’s home opened without a struggle, though her hand trembled on the knob. Julian stood in the living room, flanked by two sharp-suited campaign attorneys and three imposing private guards. The scent of her own house felt alien, contaminated.

Julian didn’t smile. His eyes were cold, distant. “Maya,” he began, his voice flat, devoid of its usual public charm. “We need to discuss your… recent actions.”

“My actions?” Maya scoffed, stepping fully into the room, refusing to be intimidated. “Your actions, Julian, are what we need to discuss. Murder. Embezzlement. Killing your own son.”

His face remained impassive. “My legal team has prepared an offer. A generous one, considering the circumstances.”

One of the attorneys stepped forward, a thick document in his hand. “Ms. Kincaid, the Lieutenant Governor is prepared to offer you a signed quiet-title settlement for the residence, along with two million dollars in cash.”

“In exchange,” the second attorney interjected smoothly, “you will check yourself into a private psychiatric facility in Montana for a minimum of six months. For your well-being, of course.”

Maya stared at them, then at Julian. He stood there, unmoving, as if observing a chess match.

“You want to buy my silence,” Maya said, her voice shaking with disbelief. “You want to declare me insane and lock me away. After everything.”

“It’s a clean break, Maya,” Julian said, finally speaking, his voice laced with a paternalistic concern that turned Maya’s stomach. “For both of us. A chance for you to recover, away from the glare of public scrutiny.”

“I won’t do it,” Maya stated, her resolve hardening. “I won’t be complicit. I won’t let you get away with this.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed. He glanced at his attorneys, a subtle nod passing between them.

“As you wish,” the first attorney said, his voice now devoid of any pretense of courtesy. “In that case, we have been instructed to revoke your access to all shared and personal accounts. Your credit cards have been canceled. Your digital access to the property has been rescinded.”

Julian looked directly at her. “I’m filing for an immediate emergency guardianship order, Maya. On grounds of incompetence. Given your recent public behavior and documented ‘hallucinations,’ it will be granted.”

The words sliced through her. She looked around her home, the place they had built together. Now, it was a trap. The guards shifted, their presence a silent threat. She was locked out. Stripped of her finances, her home, her very sanity. All by the man she had married.
