Chapter 21: One Year Later

The VIP gala’s distant chatter faded behind Maya as she moved through a service corridor. Damp air, smelling faintly of concrete and exhaust, replaced the perfumed warmth of the gallery. She navigated narrow passages, past industrial bins and stacked crates, until she reached the loading dock at the rear of the Seattle Civic Cultural Center. Rain hammered the corrugated metal roof.

A figure stood hunched near the open bay door, silhouetted against the drizzle. Dr. Caleb Finch, an independent ultrasound physicist, fiddled with a compact, wheeled rig that hummed with a low, steady energy. His unkempt hair was plastered to his forehead.

“Dr. Finch?” Maya’s voice cut through the rain.

He startled, spinning around. His eyes widened behind thick-rimmed glasses. “Ms. Kincaid. I didn’t expect to see you out here.”

“I could say the same.” Maya stepped closer, her gaze fixed on the complex array of transducers on his machine. “You’re checking structural resonance?”

Caleb nodded, pushing his glasses up his nose. “For the university. Experimental portable unit. It’s good practice. Picks up all sorts of ambient mechanical vibration.”

“Did it pick up anything… specific tonight?” Maya asked, her voice low. She watched his face, searching for a tell.

Caleb’s brow furrowed. He tapped a finger on a small, illuminated screen. “Actually, yes. Quite peculiar. A low-frequency harmonic, originating from the base of ‘The Sentinel.’ A rhythmic pulse.”

“What kind of pulse?” Maya’s breath hitched in her throat.

“Cardiac, I’d estimate,” Caleb said, his voice quiet. He adjusted a dial. “About 115 beats per minute. Irregular, but distinctly organic.”

He gestured to the screen. A bright, segmented arc pulsated within a digital representation of the statue’s base. Not just a heartbeat, but a distinct hollow cavity was rendered, and from within it, a faint, blinking signal that wasn’t structural.

“And this?” Maya pointed to the tiny, flickering dot. “What’s that signal?”

Caleb zoomed in. “An electronic transponder, weak, but active. It’s buried deep inside that void. Something organic, and something electronic.”

Before Maya could speak, a harsh voice cut through the rain. “What in God’s name is going on here?”

Mark Reyes, Julian’s private security chief, a man built like a brick wall, strode into the loading dock. His face was a mask of cold fury. Two uniformed guards flanked him.

“This is private property, doctor,” Reyes barked, pointing at Caleb. “Pack up that contraption and get out. Now.”

Caleb flinched, his shoulders tightening. “I was just performing a routine diagnostic, Mr. Reyes. Authorized for the building—”

“You’re not authorized to tamper with the Lieutenant Governor’s private art commission,” Reyes interrupted, stepping closer, his shadow falling over Caleb’s equipment. “One more word and I’ll have you arrested for trespassing and vandalism.”

Maya stepped between them. “He’s not tampering, Mark. He’s an expert. He found—”

“Ms. Kincaid,” Reyes cut her off, his eyes like chips of ice. “The Lieutenant Governor has given explicit instructions. No unauthorized personnel near the sculpture. And that includes ‘experts’ like this gentleman, or anyone else suffering from… stress-induced sensory disturbances.” His gaze lingered pointedly on Maya.

“Understood,” Maya said, her jaw tight. She met Reyes’s stare, a cold fear settling in her stomach. He knew.

Reyes then turned to his men. “Escort Dr. Finch off the premises. Ensure his equipment is securely stowed. And make sure this area is sealed.”

The guards moved to flank Caleb. He slowly began to disconnect his portable rig, his face pale, his eyes darting to Maya with a look of helpless concern. The hum of his scanner died, leaving only the relentless patter of the rain. Maya watched them go, the vibrating image of the internal cavity and the blinking transponder burning behind her eyes.
