The sound of a luxury sedan crunching gravel on the long driveway usually meant Julian was coming or going. This time, it was a sleek black Mercedes, a car I’d never seen before, pulling up to the main house. I stood by the guest cottage window, a faint tremor running through my hands.

A man in a perfectly tailored dark suit emerged from the car, carrying a slim leather brief. Garrison Finch.

Julian had mentioned him once or twice, the family’s estate notary and asset manager, a man who handled all the Caldwells’ “delicate affairs.” My stomach tightened. Nothing about Finch seemed delicate. His smile, even from this distance, looked sharp and practiced.

He walked past the manicured rose bushes, straight into the main house. An hour later, I was downstairs in the cottage kitchen, trying to distract myself with a mug of herbal tea, when a faint murmur started to filter in.

The main house wasn’t far. Sometimes, if the wind was right, and a window was open, I could catch snippets of conversation. Today, the study window, which faced my cottage, must have been ajar.

Julian’s voice, low and smooth, was distinct.

“Is everything prepared, Garrison?”

Finch responded, his voice drier, like rustling paper. “As instructed, Julian. The affidavits are drawn up. Two separate doctors’ signatures secured through our contacts in Westchester.”

A cold dread began to seep into my bones. Doctors?

“Excellent,” Julian said, a note of triumph in his tone. “And the grounds for… her current state?”

“High-risk pregnancy complications,” Finch replied without missing a beat. “Severe emotional distress following the loss of her mother. Acute anxiety leading to… unsound judgment.”

My tea mug slipped in my hand, splashing hot liquid onto the counter. Unsound judgment? They were talking about me.

“The language,” Julian mused. “Does it adequately convey… incapacitation?”

“It legally strips her of her decision-making rights,” Finch confirmed, sounding almost bored. “For her own safety, of course. Until the child is born and she’s deemed emotionally stable.”

My breath hitched. They were forging documents to make me seem mentally unfit. To keep me locked away, legally. This wasn’t just a physical prison; it was a paper one.

A soft rustling sound came through the open window, followed by a clink. It sounded like an envelope.

“And your retainer for this… expedited service?” Julian prompted.

“Twenty-five thousand in cash, as discussed,” Finch stated. “Discreetly, naturally.”

There was another rustle, softer this time. A thick envelope, I pictured, changing hands. The silence that followed stretched for a long, agonizing moment.

Then, Finch’s voice again. “Just need your signature here, Julian. And on the second set of forms, acknowledging you have assumed full legal authority over Mrs. Caldwell’s medical decisions and estate until such time as a court review deems her fit.”

A pen scratched. Then another.

I pressed my back against the cool kitchen wall, my eyes wide. My world had just shrunk to the size of Julian’s signature. He wasn’t just holding me captive; he was erasing me, making me disappear without a trace, all on paper.

The hum of the Mercedes starting up broke the spell. Finch was leaving. He had just signed away my entire existence for twenty-five thousand dollars, paid in cash.

I heard the front door of the main house close. The only sound left was the pounding of my own heart against my ribs.
