My husband had me locked in a windowless subterranean holding room beneath our Chicago estate, claiming I had suffered a severe psychotic break.
Outside the estate’s heavy iron gates, the digital clock on the guardhouse read 3:15 AM. Evelyn Montgomery, Julian’s mother, stood in a tailored silk robe, her face pale in the artificial light.
She watched an unmarked black SUV pull up, its engine cutting out silently. Colonel Sarah Hendricks, my mother, stepped out. She wore a dark, military-issue softshell jacket, her posture ramrod straight.
Evelyn’s gaze lingered on the rows of ribbons pinned to Sarah’s jacket, then drifted to the vehicle. No police lights, no uniforms. Just an imposing silence.
“Colonel Hendricks,” Evelyn purred, a patronizing smile spreading across her face. “I assume you’re here to collect your daughter’s belongings?”
Sarah said nothing, her hands clasped behind her back. Her eyes scanned the estate, taking in the security cameras, the reinforced gate, the manicured lawn.
“There’s a simple solution to all this,” Evelyn continued, her voice dripping with condescension. She reached into her robe, pulling out a thick, banded stack of hundreds. “Five hundred thousand dollars. Cash.”
She extended the stack, a theatrical gesture. “Consider it a severance package. For your trouble. For your daughter’s… unfortunate state.”
Sarah’s gaze remained fixed on a small, handheld monitor in her left hand. It displayed a grid of real-time security camera feeds from the estate, some flickering, others dark.
“Money,” Sarah said, her voice flat, “only works when the person across from you respects currency over blood.”
Evelyn laughed, a brittle sound that scraped against the cold night air. “My dear, everyone respects currency. Especially those who’ve never had it.”
She waved the cash. “Take it, Colonel. And leave. Let family matters handle themselves.”
Sarah finally looked at Evelyn, a slow, deliberate movement. “You don’t understand. This isn’t about your money. This is about what Julian did to my daughter.”
Evelyn bristled, her perfect composure cracking. “He’s protecting his family’s assets from a gold-digger who clearly lost her mind. It’s a sad, but necessary, clean-up operation.”
Sarah simply watched the monitors. One of the feeds went dark. Then another. Evelyn’s smile faltered, her eyes flicking nervously towards the main house, then back to Sarah. A new tension settled between them.
