My husband had me locked in a windowless subterranean holding room beneath our Chicago estate, claiming I had suffered a severe psychotic break.
Evelyn stood frozen, the blood pounding in her ears. “Why are you smiling?” she demanded, her voice shrill. “Why are you smiling when you’ve just called a monster to my doorstep?”
Just then, heavy armored vans, dark and intimidating, rumbled into view. They didn’t have police markings. They didn’t even have license plates. They blocked both ends of the estate’s private avenue, cutting off any escape.
Evelyn’s eyes darted frantically between Sarah and the approaching vehicles. “Who are those people? What have you done?”
Sarah’s smile widened, a grim, determined expression. “I never intended to bring police officers to a snake’s den, Evelyn.”
The first of the black sedans pulled onto the pristine, perfectly manicured lawn, its tires crunching on the gravel. Three more followed, sleek and menacing.
“I brought the cold owners of the money Julian stole,” Sarah finished.
Evelyn gasped, a strangled sound. She recognized the vehicles now, the discreet, powerful men who emerged from them. The O’Leary organization. Her carefully constructed world of wealth and political immunity began to crack.
“This is insane!” Evelyn shrieked, backing away from the gate. “You’re bringing criminals onto my property! This is a federal offense!”
“Federal offenses don’t register,” Sarah said, stepping through the gate as it swung open with a hydraulic hiss. “Not when the people you stole from operate entirely outside of federal law.”
Five figures, dressed in dark tactical gear, moved past Sarah. They were not police. They were not military. They were her private operators.
They moved with unnerving efficiency, heading straight for the estate’s power junction boxes. Sparks flew as the main lines were severed.
The last of the security cameras died, plunging the front of the estate into a deeper, unsettling darkness. Evelyn let out a choked cry, her hand flying to her mouth, staring in horror as the O’Leary men began their methodical sweep of the property.
The storm had arrived.
