The first rays of dawn were painting the Denver skyline in muted grays and purples as I called Sarah Chen, Apex Tech’s lead legal counsel. Her voice was sharp, even before her first coffee.
“Evan, this better be important,” she said, a hint of irritation.
“It is,” I replied, my voice flat. “Arthur’s trying to extort me. And he used Mia.”
I gave her the bare details, careful to protect Dr. Reyes. I emphasized Mia’s unwitting role and the critical evidence on the USB drive.
“This shows Arthur manipulated Mia’s access,” I explained, “and orchestrated the money laundering scheme through our servers. It’s direct proof.”
Sarah went silent for a moment. Then, “Bring it in. We’ll file an immediate protective injunction against Arthur and obtain a restraining order. This evidence will shut him down fast.”
By 9 AM, I was in her office. Her executive assistant brought me a black coffee, its steam curling into the sterile air. Sarah’s office, usually filled with framed legal awards, felt colder, more serious. She meticulously reviewed the text thread, her brow furrowing deeper with each scroll.
“This is damning,” she confirmed, pushing her glasses up her nose. “This proves Arthur’s sole culpability. We can freeze his assets, prevent further contact, and clear Mia entirely.”
“Good,” I said, a knot in my chest loosening slightly. “Let’s move on it.”
We spent the next few hours drafting legal documents. The mood in the office was almost triumphant. Sarah was already making calls, lining up a judge for an emergency hearing. The prospect of exposing Arthur and protecting Mia, without fully revealing Apex Tech’s temporary complicity, felt within reach.
Then, my phone buzzed. It was a news alert.
My eyes scanned the headline: “Apex Logistics Tech Founder’s Shady Past: Juvenile Arson Conviction Resurfaces Amidst Corporate Scrutiny.”
A cold dread seeped into my bones. Juvenile records were sealed. This shouldn’t have been public.
Sarah’s desk phone rang. She answered, her expression hardening as she listened. “Yes, I understand… freezing all pending contracts… significant exposure…”
She hung up, her face pale. “That was Alliance Freight. They just put a hold on our entire $20 million expansion deal. Citing ‘reputational risk.'”
My phone buzzed again. Another alert. “Exclusive: Sources Link Apex Tech Founder to Underage Financial Fraud Scheme.”
Arthur. He’d done it. He hadn’t waited for us to move. He’d hit back, hard, using the one thing I thought was buried forever. The news articles were filled with details of my juvenile conviction, ripped from sealed court records. My fifteen-year-old self, impulsive and reckless, suddenly haunted my present.
Sarah gripped the edge of her desk. “This changes everything, Evan. Clients are going to panic. They’re already calling in.”
I looked at the glowing screen of my phone, the headlines mocking my efforts. Arthur had just raised the stakes. He wasn’t just extorting me anymore; he was actively dismantling my company, piece by piece. My carefully constructed life, the one I’d built on honesty and hard work, was crumbling.
