I pushed the conservatorship papers back across the desk. My refusal hung in the air, thick with unspoken threats. Julian’s face remained impassive, but his eyes glinted with a cold fury.
My mind raced. Dr. Pembroke’s inspection of the foundation was a good plan, but what if Julian had more hidden away? Something immediate, something undeniable. His private safe.
Julian’s study was a mausoleum of antique leather and polished wood, dominated by a formidable iron safe built into the wall behind his enormous mahogany desk. He considered it impenetrable, his sanctuary.
The moment Julian, Beatrice, and Arthur left the study, believing I had retreated to sulk, I made my move. I didn’t have a key, but I knew his habits. Julian was meticulous, but also arrogant. He sometimes left his office door unlocked, certain of his control.
Luck was on my side. The study door clicked open silently. The room was dark, illuminated only by the faint light filtering through the heavy drapes. The air hung thick with the scent of his expensive cigar smoke.
I moved quickly, silently, towards the safe. I had watched him open it countless times, always with a casual, dismissive air. He used a numerical code, a string of digits, almost always the same. His mother’s birthday, followed by the year Ravencliff was built.
My fingers trembled slightly as I worked the heavy dial. The clicks were agonizingly loud in the silent room. I entered the sequence: 05-27-1753.
A soft thunk. The heavy steel door swung open.
Inside, stacked neatly, were ledgers, a few small wooden boxes, and a thick, leather-bound journal. I reached for the journal first. It looked old, significant, something Julian would hide.
As my fingers brushed against the aged leather, a sharp voice shattered the silence.
“Elena! What do you think you’re doing?”
I froze. Julian stood framed in the doorway, his face a mask of furious disbelief. Behind him, Arthur’s imposing figure filled the hall.
My heart leaped into my throat. The journal slipped from my grasp, falling back into the safe with a dull thud.
Julian strode across the room, his eyes blazing. He didn’t even glance at the open safe. His gaze was fixed on the small, blinking red light on the ceiling near the bookshelf. A security camera.
“You really are unhinged, aren’t you?” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Trespassing. Attempting to steal my private documents. And all on camera.”
Arthur stepped into the room, his presence immediately making the space feel smaller, more confining.
“This behavior is exactly why we need to proceed with the conservatorship,” Julian continued, his voice now calm, chillingly rational. He gestured to the camera. “This footage will be more than enough to confirm your instability.”
He closed the safe with a decisive click, sealing away whatever truths it held.
“Effective immediately,” Julian announced, his voice ringing with finality, “all your corporate accounts are frozen. Access to any Halloway Luxury Developments assets is hereby revoked. You are restricted to this wing of the house, under Arthur’s supervision. For your own good, of course.”
My mind raced. All my carefully laid plans to find proof, to fight back, had just been destroyed. I was locked out, financially crippled, and trapped. The vault raid had been a disastrous miscalculation.
