Chapter 5: Whistleblower’s Move

#content-1

Oliver returned home that evening, a thick, bound document clutched in his hand.

“Arthur signed it, Mum,” he announced, his voice filled with a quiet triumph. “Everything. The forged property loans, the tax evasion. Seven years of Mark’s dirty business.”

I took the affidavit, my fingers tracing Arthur’s shaky signature. This was more than I’d hoped for. This wasn’t just about marital assets anymore.

This was about serious financial crimes.

I bypassed standard divorce solicitors. A full-blown civil suit would take years, cost a fortune, and simply give Mark more time to hide assets.

I remembered the irregularities in Julian Cross’s valuation reports from the injunction notice. Those were deliberate, falsified audits.

My mind went straight to the HM Revenue & Customs oversight panel. This was a regulatory issue, a compliance breach, not just a divorce spat.

I spent the next two days meticulously compiling a detailed 14-page whistleblower report.

I included certified copies of Julian Cross’s false audits, cross-referencing them with Arthur Pendelton’s sworn affidavit. I added the offshore transfer deeds from the yellow envelope.

Every numbered paragraph was a hammer blow against Mark’s carefully constructed financial façade.

I had the package sent by registered post, a certified copy arriving at the tax compliance committee’s London office.

Forty-eight hours later, my phone rang. A blocked number.

“Eleanor,” a frantic voice blurted out. “It’s Julian. Julian Cross.”

I remained silent, listening.

“Listen, that report you sent,” he stammered, his voice tight with panic. “The panel… they’ve just issued an urgent audit notice on my firm.”

He took a ragged breath. “They’re looking at everything. The valuations, the Panama entities… everything.”

“My clients depend on my license,” he pleaded. “Mark’s schemes are putting me out of business.”

“And?” I prompted, my voice calm, clinical.

“I need double my fee, Eleanor,” he blurted. “Mark isn’t paying enough to cover this level of risk. I need to get this whole thing locked down before it ruins me.”

I hung up, a small, grim smile touching my lips. My move had sent tremors through their corrupt network. Julian Cross was already turning on Mark, seeing his own professional life unravel.

The true cost of Mark’s deceit was beginning to surface.
