Chapter 6: Fractures in the Alliance

#content-1

The news of the tax compliance committee’s audit reached Chloe Davies’s father quickly. He owned the company in Panama, unwittingly used as a liability shield for Mark’s hidden assets.

Chloe confronted Mark at a high-end restaurant in Mayfair, the clinking of cutlery and hushed conversations providing an ironic backdrop to their growing discord.

“My father just got a call from HM Revenue & Customs,” Chloe said, her voice strained. “About tax inquiries into his Panamanian entity.”

Mark waved a dismissive hand, attempting to project an air of nonchalance. “Eleanor’s just making wild fabrications, Chloe. Desperate ex-wife, trying to cause trouble.”

He gestured for the waiter to refill his wine glass, a practiced smile on his face. “She’s trying to muddy the waters. Don’t worry about it.”

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. “He said they mentioned an £850,000 property transfer. Our house, Mark? The one you said was debt-free?”

Mark’s smile faltered, a flicker of annoyance crossing his features. “It’s a complex financial structure, darling. Tax optimization.”

“Tax optimization that’s now under investigation?” Chloe pushed, her voice rising slightly. “My father is furious. He trusted you.”

Mark tried to soothe her, reaching across the table. “Just a minor inquiry. Julian Cross will handle it.”

“Julian Cross is also under investigation,” Chloe shot back, pulling away. “My father heard from his own accountant that Cross’s firm is in turmoil. He called it a ‘major regulatory breach.’”

The words hung in the air. Mark had painted a picture of himself as a successful, wealthy corporate director, his future intertwined with Chloe’s.

Now, her father’s frantic calls and the unsettling news about Julian Cross chipped away at that image.

“I pulled some old property records online,” Chloe continued, her voice hardening. “The Surrey house… it has two secret secondary mortgages. Arranged by Julian Cross. Totaling over £400,000.”

Mark’s face tightened. He had claimed the house was fully paid off, a stable asset. The reality was a web of hidden debt.

“So, the £850,000 house isn’t some debt-free asset,” Chloe concluded, her voice cold. “It’s heavily leveraged. And your actual liquid wealth… it’s virtually nonexistent, isn’t it?”

Mark slumped back in his chair, the practiced charm draining from his face. He watched the waiter approach their table, his eyes darting around the restaurant, suddenly aware of who might be listening.

The alliance was fracturing, built on Mark’s carefully constructed lies. Chloe finally saw the cracks.
