My Political Business Partner Cornered Me Outside Court While 7 Months Pregnant — He Didn't Realize His Security Chief Was Working For Me
I was still processing Gavin’s story when his secure phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, then handed it to me.
“Assistant Prosecutor Diane O’Connor,” he murmured. “She’s been waiting for an update.”
I took the call. “Ms. O’Connor, this is Sarah Lindqvist.”
“Ms. Lindqvist, I’ve just been notified,” Diane’s voice was sharp, professional, tinged with urgency. “Marcus Hollister just filed an emergency conservatorship petition against you.”
My stomach clenched. Conservatorship. A legal mechanism to declare someone unable to manage their own affairs.
“On what grounds?” I asked, my voice tight.
“Mental incompetence,” she stated, the words like a punch to the gut. “He submitted affidavits from your mother, Evelyn Lindqvist, and your brother, Arthur Lindqvist. They claim you’re exhibiting erratic behavior, making reckless financial decisions, and are unfit to manage your assets or the campaign’s.”
The cold, hard confirmation of my mother’s tearful confession. Marcus was using their coerced statements against me, weaponizing my own family.
“This is a direct retaliation for what happened at the courthouse,” I told Diane. “He’s trying to incapacitate me, strip me of my ability to fight back.”
“I agree,” Diane said, her tone grim. “The judge granted a temporary injunction. Your personal bank accounts have been frozen, effective immediately.”
My jaw tightened. This was a classic move. Freezing my liquid assets, cutting off access to any funds I might use for legal defense or to continue my investigation.
“Does this affect the campaign accounts?” I asked, thinking quickly.
“Not directly, yet,” she replied. “But it sends a clear signal. He wants to cut off your resources, Ms. Lindqvist. He wants you isolated and desperate.”
The shock settled over me. Marcus truly believed I was cornered, that I was a vulnerable, pregnant woman whose family had abandoned her. He thought this would be the final blow.
“He’s underestimating me,” I said, a slow, dangerous resolve hardening my voice. “He thinks I’m reacting. He doesn’t realize I’ve been preparing.”
Diane was silent for a moment. “Gavin Drake gave us some compelling information about Finch and those offshore accounts. We’re moving on that. But this conservatorship makes your personal situation difficult in the short term.”
“It creates a public narrative,” I pointed out. “A desperate woman, losing her mind. It’s designed to discredit me entirely.”
“Precisely,” Diane agreed. “We’ll work to get it lifted, but it won’t be quick.”
I ended the call, the silence of the SUV heavy around me. My personal funds were locked. My reputation was under attack. Marcus had fully committed to his strategy of public and financial strangulation. He thought I was alone, flailing in the dark.
But he was wrong. He had just confirmed his belief in my weakness, and that was exactly what I wanted him to think.
