Chapter 14: The Old Workshop

The morning of the core facility inspection dawned grey and cold, matching the knot in my stomach. My team and I were gathered in a temporary briefing room, reviewing schematics of the secure zones. The air was thick with the smell of stale coffee and nervous energy. Marcus O’Neill was projecting a complex diagram of the facility’s server architecture onto the wall when his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen, then his face went utterly blank. “No,” he muttered, shaking his head.

“What is it, Marcus?” I asked, already dreading the answer. The silence from him was louder than any alarm.

He cleared his throat, his gaze meeting mine, and his usual calm demeanor was shattered. “It’s Arthur again. He just cancelled our $500,000 indemnity bond.”

A collective gasp went through my team. The indemnity bond was non-negotiable for federal defense audits of this scale. It covered any potential damages or liabilities incurred by the auditing firm during the inspection process. Without it, we couldn’t even step foot in the secure facility.

“Cancelled?” I repeated, my voice hollow. “How is that even possible?”

“He leveraged another clause,” Marcus explained, his voice tight with barely suppressed rage. “This one from an old contract with the federal oversight committee, tying the bond’s validity to the ‘ongoing financial solvency and good standing’ of the auditing firm. He’s claiming our frozen credit line and retainer payment make us insolvent.”

The room seemed to shrink. This wasn’t just an inconvenience or a delay. This was a direct, calculated move to disqualify us.

“That’s a direct breach of contract,” one of my analysts murmured, horrified.

“And a blatant attempt to obstruct a federal audit,” another added.

“It’s worse than that,” Marcus said, his finger tapping furiously on his tablet. “The cancellation was processed. We have exactly four hours to secure an emergency waiver or re-establish the bond, or the DoD automatically pulls our audit credentials. The entire contract is void.”

Four hours. The primary facility inspection was scheduled to begin in less than an hour. Arthur had timed this perfectly, leaving us no time to maneuver, no time to appeal. He wasn’t just trying to get rid of me; he was trying to destroy my firm’s reputation, to ensure we’d never get another federal contract again. Disqualification on these grounds would be a black mark that would follow us for years.

The bitter taste from Elena’s revelation about my mother mingled with this fresh wave of corporate cruelty. Was this another one of his “protections”? To ensure I couldn’t succeed in the very industry he supposedly wanted to shield me from?

My team looked at me, their faces a mixture of fear and defiance. They had put their careers on the line to work for Sentinel Solutions, to work for me. Now, everything we had built was hanging by a thread, about to be unraveled by my father’s desperate machinations.

“This is it, Maya,” Marcus said, his voice quiet but firm. “He’s trying to kill the company. What do we do?”

I took a slow breath, forcing myself to push down the surge of panic. “We fight.”

But even as I said the words, I knew “fighting” meant navigating a labyrinth of legal and bureaucratic hurdles in a fraction of the time we had. And time was the one thing Arthur Hollister had just taken away from us.
