When a Ruthless Syndicate Boss Gaslights Her 64-Year-Old Veteran Fixer After Locking Her 4-Year-Old Stepson With a Giant Python to Seize $45 Million in Mob Assets, an Accidental Document Discovery...
The terms of my forfeiture were swift and absolute. Don Sal’s men wasted no time. Lawyers, already on standby, began drafting the documents. There was no appeal, no negotiation.
“Your entire $2 million syndicate retirement pension will be transferred to a protected fund for Leo DeMarco’s future,” Don Sal explained, his voice devoid of emotion as he oversaw the proceedings. “Your property, the house in Westchester, the lakefront cabin in Vermont—all will be liquidated, and the proceeds added to the fund. Effective immediately.”
My world, the one I had built over six decades, was being dismantled piece by piece. The numbers, precise and cold, flashed on the legal papers. Two million dollars, accumulated over forty years of loyalty and calculated risks, gone. The home where I’d envisioned spending my quiet golden years, taken.
“Mob protection is withdrawn,” Don Sal continued. “You are no longer affiliated. No resources, no contacts. Your name will be removed from all rolls. You are, for all intents and purposes, invisible.”
I nodded, signing where indicated. Each stroke of the pen felt like severing a nerve, a clean cut from my past. The freedom that came with protection, the network of favors and information—all dissolved. I would be a ghost, adrift.
“Leo will be placed with an untainted relative,” Don Sal confirmed, glancing at the boy, who was now being led away by Vinnie to get some rest. “A distant cousin in upstate New York, far from the city. They are unaware of the family’s business. He will grow up in peace, with no knowledge of this life.”
That was the crucial part, the reason for the drastic measures. If I remained, if I even retained my pension, my presence would forever tie Leo to the underworld. His inheritance, his safety, would always be tainted by association. My exile bought him a new, clean slate.
Vinnie stood by, silent and grim. He had chosen his path, his allegiance to the old code. He had delivered Claudia to justice, and now he watched me pay the price for it. There was no reproach in his eyes, only a quiet understanding.
“This is the way it must be, Artie,” Vinnie said softly, when we had a moment alone as the lawyers finalized the paperwork. “For the kid.”
“I know,” I replied, the words catching in my throat.
I watched as the last document was signed, scanned, and filed. The laptop snapped shut. My life, as I knew it, was officially over. I was a man without a country, without a past, in the eyes of the underworld.
My pockets were empty. My bank accounts zeroed out. Everything was gone, given up willingly for the innocent life of a child. The sacrifice was complete.
