When a Ruthless Syndicate Boss Gaslights Her 64-Year-Old Veteran Fixer After Locking Her 4-Year-Old Stepson With a Giant Python to Seize $45 Million in Mob Assets, an Accidental Document Discovery...
I moved carefully, slowly, not wanting to startle the python. The snake watched me, its lidless eyes unblinking, but it didn’t coil tighter or show any aggression. Leo just looked at me, still calm.
“Hey there, buddy,” I whispered to Leo, reaching out a hand, then thinking better of it.
“Artie,” Vinnie urged, his voice hushed. “The collar.”
I nodded. The red light continued to blink. I could see the tiny lens of the camera, barely visible against the snake’s dark scales. It was clearly a custom piece, integrated seamlessly.
The collar had a small magnetic clasp. I gently reached forward, my fingers trembling slightly. The python’s head lifted a fraction, flicking its tongue, but didn’t protest. I detached the collar with a soft click.
“Stay with Leo,” I told Vinnie. “Don’t let her near him.”
Vinnie nodded, moving to stand protectively in front of Leo and the python. He had breached the door, seen the truth. His allegiance was firm now.
I hurried to the small, built-in desk on the far side of the panic room. It was one of the few pieces of furniture that hadn’t been toppled by the shelf. I found a spare tablet, one of the many high-tech gadgets meant for emergency communications. It had a slot for micro-SD cards.
The collar’s memory chip was tiny, barely bigger than my thumbnail. I carefully extracted it and inserted it into the tablet. My fingers felt clumsy, thick with adrenaline.
The screen flickered to life. I navigated to the video files. There was only one, dated this afternoon.
I pressed play.
The video quality was startlingly clear. The first image was a close-up of the panic room’s interior, showing Leo playing with his toy cars, oblivious. The camera then panned slightly, showing the inside of the heavy door.
Then, the click of the lock.
The camera rotated further, and there she was. Claudia DeMarco, her face stark and sharp in the high-definition footage. She was standing just outside the door, her hand on the exterior deadbolt, twisting it shut.
Her lips moved, barely a whisper, but the sensitive microphone on the collar picked up every syllable.
“Sleep tight, Leo,” Claudia murmured, her voice laced with chilling satisfaction. “You’ll never inherit a single penny of the DeMarco fortune.”
A cold dread seeped into my bones. It wasn’t just neglect. It was deliberate, premeditated. Her eyes, captured by the camera, held no flicker of remorse. Only calculation.
Vinnie had stepped up behind me, watching the tablet screen. A low growl rumbled in his chest. His hand went to the suppressed firearm tucked into his waistband.
The video played on, showing Claudia walking away, her silhouette shrinking down the hallway. The camera remained, capturing the quiet horror of the locked room.
The evidence was undeniable. Irrefutable. This wasn’t an accident. It was a hit.
