A sharp gasp ripped through the quiet of the panic room. Claudia stood in the doorway, her face pale, her eyes wide with a terrible dawning realization. She must have heard her own voice echoing from the tablet screen.

She had followed us into the room, drawn by the silence and the undeniable evidence. Now, she saw the collar in my hand, the screen displaying her confession.

“You,” she hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me. “You set me up, you old fool!”

I stood my ground, clutching the tablet. Vinnie moved closer to Leo, shielding him further with his body. The python remained a silent, vigilant presence.

Claudia’s hand darted into her purse. She pulled out a small, snub-nosed revolver, its dark metal glinting menacingly in the dim light. It was a standard underworld piece, small enough to conceal, deadly at close range.

“That estate is mine!” she shrieked, her carefully constructed composure shattered. Her voice was raw, desperate. “He meant nothing! Nothing!”

She raised the revolver, aiming it directly at me. I braced myself, my breath catching in my throat. My life had been lived by a code, but facing down a boss, even a deranged one, was a new kind of terror.

Before she could squeeze the trigger, Vinnie moved. He was a blur of motion, fast for a man his size.

He stepped in front of me, placing himself between Claudia and her target. His hand shot out, not toward his own weapon, but directly at her. His movement was practiced, economical. He grabbed her wrist, twisting it sharply.

Claudia cried out in pain and surprise. The revolver clattered to the floor, sliding across the polished marble. It came to rest near the broken display shelf, inert.

“Boss,” Vinnie said, his voice cold, devoid of any past loyalty. “You don’t harm an heir. You don’t harm a child. And you certainly don’t harm those who protect them.”

He gave her wrist another sharp twist, and Claudia stumbled back, clutching her arm. Her eyes, filled with hatred and shock, darted between Vinnie, me, and the tablet in my hand.

“This is against code,” Vinnie continued, his voice resonating with an authority I hadn’t heard from him before. He stood tall, a formidable wall of muscle and unwavering principle. “You crossed a line, Claudia. The DeMarco line. The Commission will hear about this.”

Claudia backed away, her face twisting into a sneer. She looked at the disarmed revolver on the floor, then at Vinnie, who stood unmoving. She knew better than to challenge him when he was in this mode. She knew what “The Hammer” was capable of.

“You’re dead, Artie!” she screamed, her voice echoing in the large penthouse. “Both of you! Dead!”

But her threats held no power now. The revolver lay on the floor. Vinnie stood firm. And the blinking red light on the tablet screen continued to expose her every lie.
