When a Ruthless Syndicate Boss Gaslights Her 64-Year-Old Veteran Fixer After Locking Her 4-Year-Old Stepson With a Giant Python to Seize $45 Million in Mob Assets, an Accidental Document Discovery...
Claudia’s face was a mask of cold fury. She could practically taste the estate. The vault door, sleek and impenetrable, stood between her and $45 million.
“I said *now*, Vinnie!” she snapped, her voice cracking with impatience. “The boy needs medical attention. We need to get him out before it’s too late. It’s Artie’s fault he was in there. His incompetence.”
Vinnie didn’t move. He stood rigid, staring at the door. I saw the muscles in his jaw clench, then relax, then clench again. The crumpled paper in his pocket felt like a live thing, burning a hole through the fabric.
“Vinnie, you deaf?” Claudia demanded, taking a step toward him. “Are you refusing a direct order?”
His gaze finally left the vault. He looked at Claudia, then at me. His eyes were troubled, heavy with a decision. He had a reputation, “The Hammer,” for unwavering loyalty. But that loyalty had just been tested by a piece of paper, a truth he couldn’t unsee.
“The kid’s in there,” Vinnie said, his voice low, almost a growl. “With a snake. That’s not right, boss.”
Claudia scoffed. “It’s an accident, Vinnie. A tragic accident. Artie left the door unlatched, like I told you. He’s old, forgetful. We’ve gone over this.” She tried to regain control, to reassert her narrative.
“Forgetful?” Vinnie asked, his voice flat. He reached into his jacket. Instead of his suppressed firearm, he pulled out a heavy breaching tool, a blunt, industrial device with a thick, reinforced head.
Claudia’s eyes widened. “What are you doing?” she shrieked. “That’s a custom lock! You’ll damage the mechanism!”
He ignored her, hefting the tool. It looked like a medieval battering ram, miniaturized for urban infiltration. The faint scratching from inside the vault seemed to grow louder, more insistent.
“This lock,” Vinnie stated, planting his feet firmly, “doesn’t open without a keycard. And you got it in your hand, boss.”
Claudia’s mouth fell open, then snapped shut. She clutched her purse, where I knew the keycard was. She stared at him, betrayed. The thin veneer of her carefully constructed accident was crumbling.
Vinnie didn’t wait for a reply. He raised the breaching tool high, a blur of practiced motion. The air around him seemed to hum with his resolve.
The first blow landed with a deafening CRACK, echoing down the empty marble hallway. Sparks flew as the tool slammed into the electronic deadbolt mechanism. The expensive panel housing the lock splintered, bits of polished steel and wiring spraying across the floor.
Claudia gasped, a choked sound of outrage and disbelief. “Stop! You’ll pay for that, Vinnie! You hear me? You’ll pay!”
He delivered a second blow, then a third, each one a thunderclap against the reinforced door. Metal shrieked. The heavy door shuddered in its frame. The electronic lock, designed to withstand a siege, groaned under the onslaught.
With a final, shattering strike, the deadbolt assembly ripped free from the door, hanging precariously by a few wires. The door itself, still securely latched by its heavy hinges, now stood unlocked, its electronic guardian destroyed.
Vinnie lowered the tool, breathing heavily. He looked at me, a grim nod. The way was clear.
