The private syndicate club hummed with a low, barely audible current of power. It wasn’t a place for loud confrontations, but for quiet, lethal judgments. The air smelled of expensive cigars, old leather, and a hint of the fear that always permeated these rooms.

At the head of a long, polished mahogany table sat Don Sal Moretti, his face a roadmap of decades in the underworld. His eyes, though old, missed nothing. To his left and right sat other members of the Commission, men whose names commanded territories and loyalty across the tri-state area. Each wore an impeccably tailored suit, their expressions unreadable.

I stood at one end of the table, Vinnie beside me. Leo, dressed in a fresh, clean outfit from the safe house, sat on a plush velvet chair in a quieter corner of the room, under the watchful eye of one of Don Sal’s trusted men. The python, surprisingly docile after its ordeal, was secured in a discreet transport crate Vinnie had sourced, also out of sight.

Claudia sat opposite me, at the other end of the table. Her face was chalk-white, her eyes darting nervously between me, Don Sal, and the other Commission members. She had brought no lawyer, no lieutenants. Only a desperate hope that she could talk her way out.

“Artie,” Don Sal’s voice rumbled, cutting through the silence. “You called this emergency session. Present your case.”

I took a deep breath. My hands, still steady from the adrenaline, placed the folded import ledger on the table, sliding it gently toward Don Sal. He picked it up, his gaze scanning the lines, then fixed on Claudia’s signature. His eyebrows raised almost imperceptibly.

Next, I placed the tablet on the table. “This contains the footage, Don Sal,” I stated, activating the video.

The small screen came to life, and Claudia’s face filled the room, magnified by the cold, impartial lens of the camera. Her voice, thin and clear, whispered her confession: “Sleep tight, Leo. You’ll never inherit a single penny of the DeMarco fortune.”

A collective, barely perceptible stiffening went through the Commission members. No one spoke. No one moved. The only sound was Claudia’s own voice, damning her in chilling detail.

The video ended. The silence in the room was absolute, heavy with judgment.

Don Sal looked at Claudia. “Is this your signature?” he asked, holding up the ledger.

Claudia stammered. Her jaw worked, but no coherent words emerged. She licked her lips, her eyes darting like a trapped animal. “I… I… it’s a mistake. An old document. Artie… he framed me!”

Her voice was high-pitched, desperate. She pointed a trembling finger at me. “He’s old! Senile! He’s trying to steal the estate!”

Don Sal simply raised an eyebrow. He then tapped the tablet. “And this footage? Is that your voice, Claudia? Your face?”

She tried to speak, but only incoherent sounds escaped. Her carefully constructed facade had crumbled under the weight of the evidence. She stumbled over her words, her body trembling.

“This is an outrage!” she finally managed to choke out. “I’m the head of the DeMarco family! You can’t just…”

Don Sal held up a hand, a quiet, imperious gesture that silenced her instantly. He didn’t need to shout. His authority was absolute.

He nodded subtly to two large, silent men standing by the door. They moved forward, approaching Claudia.

She flinched, then stood, trying to regain some semblance of dignity. “This is a misunderstanding,” she whispered, her voice barely audible now. “A gross injustice…”

Without a word, the Commission guards took her by each arm. She offered no real resistance, only a defeated sag of her shoulders. They escorted her quietly out of the room, her footsteps echoing softly down the deserted hallway. There was no scene, no struggle. Just a silent, undeniable removal.

The table remained silent, the tablet still displaying Claudia’s face, her whispered confession hanging in the air. The verdict had been delivered without a single spoken word from the Commission.
