The door closed softly behind Claudia, leaving only the Commission members, Vinnie, Leo, and me in the room. The air was heavy, but the suffocating tension had lifted. Don Sal steepled his fingers, his gaze fixed on me.

“The evidence is irrefutable, Artie,” Don Sal said, his voice grave. “Claudia DeMarco will face underworld justice for her crimes against the family and against the code. Her assets will be seized, her influence stripped. And Leo will be protected, as is his birthright.”

A wave of profound relief washed over me, so potent it made my knees want to buckle. Leo was safe. The primary objective had been achieved.

“Thank you, Don Sal,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “You have my eternal gratitude.”

He nodded. “However,” he continued, and my stomach tightened. I knew there was always a cost. “You yourself, Artie Callahan, broke established chain-of-command protocols. You bypassed the direct authority of a syndicate chief to bring this matter before the Commission.”

I held his gaze, bracing myself. I had known this was coming. My actions, though necessary, were a breach of a rigid system.

“The code is absolute, Artie,” Don Sal stated, his voice firm. “Even for those who act with righteous intentions. Your actions, while saving an innocent, could have triggered a bloody syndicate war if handled improperly. Chaos cannot be allowed to stand.”

He paused, letting his words sink in. The other Commission members watched me, their expressions somber. This wasn’t about malice; it was about maintaining order, about upholding the very structure of the underworld.

“Therefore,” Don Sal concluded, “to maintain the integrity of our laws, and to ensure that no precedent is set for junior members to openly defy their superiors, a steep penalty must be applied.”

My throat tightened. I had risked everything for Leo. My life, my reputation. But the Commission always exacted its due.

“To ensure Leo’s complete protection, to remove any lingering doubt about his guardianship, and to prevent any future challenges to the DeMarco estate,” Don Sal decreed, his eyes piercing me. “You must sever all ties with the syndicate. Permanently.”

He leaned forward slightly. “You will forfeit your entire life’s retirement earnings. Your estate property, purchased through syndicate commissions, will revert to the Commission. And all mob protection, all status, all affiliation, will be irrevocably stripped. You will be exiled. Tonight.”

A collective gasp from some of the other members. It was a harsh sentence. Not death, but a civil death, a complete erasure from the only world I had ever known. My entire life, forty years of service, reduced to nothing. Two million dollars in pension, gone. The house I bought, the safe little nest egg for my old age, vanished.

But Leo was alive. He was safe.

I looked at Leo, sitting quietly in the corner, coloring in a book Don Sal’s man had given him. He was innocent, unaware of the price being paid for his survival.

“I understand, Don Sal,” I said, my voice steady, though my heart ached with the weight of the decision. “I accept the Commission’s ruling.”

Don Sal regarded me for a long moment, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. “So be it, Artie Callahan,” he finally said. “Your sacrifice will ensure the boy’s future. And the stability of the DeMarco line. That is all.”
