When a Ruthless Syndicate Boss Gaslights Her 64-Year-Old Veteran Fixer After Locking Her 4-Year-Old Stepson With a Giant Python to Seize $45 Million in Mob Assets, an Accidental Document Discovery...
I pressed the folded paper into Vinnie’s calloused palm. My hand brushed against the rough texture of his jacket, a quick, almost imperceptible movement. Claudia stood just a few feet away, her back to us, barking orders into her cell phone.
“Artie, you hear me?” she snapped, not turning. “I need those security protocols updated *yesterday*.”
Her voice was sharp, oblivious. She was already spinning the narrative, solidifying my supposed negligence.
Vinnie’s fingers curled around the document. His eyes, usually impassive, flickered down to the paper, then back to me, a question etched deep within them. He was a man of action, not paperwork. But this wasn’t just any paper.
He unfolded it slowly, carefully, his gaze sweeping over the lines of text. The penthouse hallway smelled faintly of stale cigar smoke and the polished mahogany that lined the walls. Expensive, silent, and utterly devoid of warmth.
The document was an animal acquisition ledger, specifically for exotic reptiles. It detailed the import of a ten-foot reticulated python, designated for “private collection, security enhancement.” Below that, a handwritten note, unmistakable in its stark instruction: “Maintain minimal feeding regimen. Encourage aggressive behavior.”
And at the very bottom, Claudia DeMarco’s signature, looping and confident.
Vinnie’s eyes widened, a slow, dawning comprehension. The color drained from his face, leaving a pale, almost gray cast. He looked like he’d just swallowed something foul.
“What is that?” Claudia asked, finally turning, her phone still pressed to her ear. Her eyes narrowed, fixed on the paper in Vinnie’s hand.
Vinnie quickly crumpled the paper, shoving it into his pocket. He didn’t answer her. He just stood there, a granite statue suddenly defaced.
“Nothing, boss,” he mumbled, his voice hoarse. “Just a receipt for some deliveries. Artie was, uh, cleaning out his pockets.”
Claudia’s gaze pierced him, then me. She saw the tremor in his hand, the way his jaw was tight. She didn’t believe him for a second.
“Get to work, Vinnie,” she commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “The vault. Now.”
She pointed to the reinforced steel door of the panic room. A faint, rhythmic scratching sound was audible from within, making my stomach churn.
Vinnie hesitated. His eyes met mine, a silent conversation passing between us. He had been hired by Claudia. He was her enforcer, her hammer. But the underworld had its own laws, an old code that ran deeper than any boss’s command. Harming a child, especially an heir, was a line few dared to cross.
The crumpled paper in his pocket was a fuse.
