A heavy thud echoed from the front gate. Julian and Clara looked at each other. The deadline was up.
Two uniformed Boston police officers and Arthur’s lead attorney, a man Julian recognized from old family photos, walked up the path. The attorney carried a temporary seizure warrant, issued by a probate judge.
Before the officers could cross the threshold of Julian’s workshop, Clara stepped onto the porch. She held up two documents: the certified copy of Clause 14-B and Madeline’s original Artist-Sponsor Agreement.
“Officers,” she said, her voice clear and firm, “under Massachusetts state law, specifically M.G.L. Chapter 203, Section 15, this 30-year reversion clause renders the plaintiff’s trust claim null and void as of midnight last night.”
She presented the legal precedent to the lead officer. The officer, a woman with a no-nonsense expression, took the papers and began to read, her eyes scanning the dates and clauses. Arthur’s attorney’s face tightened into a grimace.
