Julian, his face set with a fierce determination, pulled a compact tool kit from his belt. He moved to a secondary power junction box near the central control console.
“He cut the main lines,” Julian said, his fingers already working at the access panel. “But I can hotwire the auxiliary system. Patch us into the emergency bandwidth.”
Sparks flew as Julian expertly bypassed the safety mechanisms, his eyes focused. A surge of power hummed through the antiquated system.
“We have two options, Arthur,” Julian said, looking up. “I can override the deadbolts on the basement vault. That’ll give us physical access to everything. Or,” he continued, pointing towards the ceiling, “I can patch us directly into the rooftop tower’s emergency frequency. Get a direct signal out.”
Arthur considered both options. The vault held the physical evidence, the definitive proof. The rooftop tower offered immediate communication, a chance to call for help and expose the fraud directly to authorities.
“The basement vault is secured by a dual keycard system,” Arthur recalled, a sudden memory flashing through his mind. “My late wife, Evelyn. She always said she kept a copy of her original Army Medical Corps keycard. In her personal safe-deposit box. She never trusted the military to preserve its own history.”
Julian looked at him, then back at the console. “So the vault needs more than just power. But the tower… that’s just a frequency override. Your choice, Arthur. Which priority?”
