Arthur, his mind racing, began sifting through the newly recovered corporate documents. Julian stood by, ready to scan anything Arthur deemed crucial.
He pulled out a series of legal notes, dated six months prior. His eyes skimmed the text, then widened in sudden understanding.
“Look at this, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice tight. “Promissory notes. Signed by Derek.”
Julian leaned over, his gaze dropping to the documents. “Gambling debts? $420,000 to a Chicago syndicate?”
Arthur nodded, pointing to a recent date on the bottom of the page. “And look who purchased the notes. Lyle Bramwell. Two weeks ago.”
Julian let out a sharp intake of breath. “Bramwell bought Derek’s debt? He cornered him.”
“Exactly,” Arthur confirmed, his hands shaking slightly. “Derek wasn’t the mastermind. He was coerced. Bramwell bought his notes, then presented him with this land fraud scheme. Derek was desperate. He owes over four hundred thousand dollars.”
The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place. Derek’s overextension, his gambling problem, all of it had been a vulnerability that Bramwell ruthlessly exploited. Derek, the charismatic son-in-law, was merely a desperate pawn.
“Bramwell is the primary manipulator,” Arthur concluded, a cold anger replacing his earlier rage. “He’s using Derek, then he was going to discard him.”
Julian looked towards the reinforced glass, towards the figures in the courtyard. “This changes everything. Derek’s not just greedy; he’s cornered.”
