“Sir?” Julian prompted, his voice gentle.
Arthur took a deep breath, the bitter taste of truth on his tongue. He pressed the switch.
A burst of static, then the console’s indicator lights flared. The complete historical record, the 1958 patient files, the secret directives, and Arthur’s own damning memo, streamed out across the federal wire systems, into the public domain.
Forty-two minutes later, news began to trickle back through the emergency frequency. BioChem Dynamics, the corporate entity behind the land deal, saw its stock plummet by 68% in off-hours trading.
Outside in the courtyard, a black corporate sedan pulled up next to Derek’s van. A man in a suit got out, spoke a few quick words to Derek, then handed him a thick envelope. Derek’s shoulders slumped. He opened it, scanned the contents, his face going ashen.
His corporate backers had instantly rescinded his legal representation. They had abandoned him. Without a word exchanged between them, the man in the suit got back into the sedan and drove away, leaving Derek standing alone, clutching the documents.
Lyle Bramwell, who had been attempting to sabotage a generator transformer, stopped dead. He stared at the disappearing sedan, then at Derek, then at the lit transmission tower. His face was a mask of utter defeat.
The silence that followed was heavy, punctuated only by the distant wail of approaching sirens.
