Arthur and Julian navigated the winding ducts, eventually emerging into a vast, central control hub. Reinforced glass, thick as a tank viewport, overlooked the facility’s main courtyard.

Outside, the cold autumn light painted the scene with sharp clarity. A mobile communications van sat parked, its satellite dish pointing skyward.

Standing beside it was Derek Hollister, Arthur’s son-in-law. He wore a crisp suit, his usual charismatic smile frozen on his face as he checked his wrist-watch.

Beside him, a portly man in a tailored jacket held a large, rolled-up document. Lyle Bramwell, the private insurance adjuster Arthur had seen at his daughter Clara’s house just last week.

Bramwell gestured towards the facility, then to the document. Arthur’s stomach dropped. He could read the bold letters on the top of the paper, even from a distance: “DEMOLITION CONTRACT – $1,400,000 VALUE.”

Derek nodded, then pointed back towards the blast door, a cruel, satisfied smirk on his face.

“He wants the land cleared,” Arthur hissed, his voice tight with rage. “He needs me incapacitated for the insurance payout to trigger. $1.4 million. That’s why he bought the facility.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed, his hands tightening on his camera. “He’s doing it for money. My grandfather’s legacy, your life… all for a demolition contract.”

Arthur glanced at the old 1958 auxiliary radio array in the corner of the control hub, its myriad switches and dials beckoning. It was an ancient system, but still functional. He also saw a switch panel connected to the exterior ward horn speakers.

He had to act. He could transmit the vault archives to regulatory agencies, or he could expose Derek and Bramwell to anyone within earshot.
