My Husband Lied About Acute Cardiac Arrest While Boarding a First-Class Flight to Cabo With His Mistress — A Misplaced Corporate Asset Document Revealed What He Truly Owed Me
A black Mercedes screeched to a halt in my driveway. A moment later, Evelyn Garrick, Julian’s mother, was pounding on my front door.
I opened it to find her impeccably dressed, her face a mask of furious indignation. “Claire, what have you done?” she shrieked, marching past me into the living room. “Julian called me, hysterical! You must withdraw whatever ridiculous paperwork you filed with the bank immediately!”
I closed the door silently. She was shaking with anger, her diamond earrings sparkling under the chandelier.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve unleashed?” she demanded, gesturing wildly. “This will ruin Julian’s career! Our family name!”
I walked into the kitchen. The kettle was already hot.
“Don’t you ignore me, young lady!” Evelyn’s voice sharpened. “This Elena business is not what you think. She’s a woman of real corporate stature! She actually helps Julian’s career.”
She knew. She had known all along. Her tears about Julian’s “heart attack” were just part of the act.
I pulled down a mug, dropped a tea bag inside, and poured hot water. The fragrant steam rose between us.
“Honestly, Claire, you’re so naive,” Evelyn continued, unaware of the cold fury hardening in my chest. “Did you really think Julian would stay with someone as… unambitious as you? Elena brings connections.”
I carried the cup of tea back into the living room. I placed it gently on the coffee table in front of her.
Then, without a single word, I turned and walked away.
Evelyn’s mouth dropped open. “Claire! Don’t you dare walk away from me!”
I continued up the grand staircase Julian had always been so proud of. Every step felt like a statement.
“You’re being utterly ridiculous! Immature! Think of Julian! Think of what you’re doing!” her voice echoed up the stairwell.
I reached my bedroom door. The familiar click of the lock muffled her desperate, enraged screams.
The tea, untouched, sat steaming on the coffee table below.
