Chapter 18: Three Days Later

Julian’s driver dropped him off in front of the gleaming glass high-rise that housed Apex Advisory Partners. The morning sun glinted off the polished lobby floor as he strode confidently inside.

Today was the day. The finalization of his promotion to Senior Managing Partner. The reward for his “visionary” Cabo trip.

He approached the sleek security turnstiles, pulling out his executive keycard. He held it against the scanner, ready for the familiar green light and soft click.

Instead, the light flashed an angry, insistent red. An audible error tone pierced the quiet hum of the lobby.

He tried again, more forcefully. The same red flash, the same blaring error.

His smile wavered. “What the…?”

Two uniformed building guards, both much larger than Julian, approached him. Their expressions were polite, but firm.

“Mr. Garrick?” one asked, his voice even.

Julian bristled. “Yes, it’s Julian Garrick. My card seems to be malfunctioning.”

The guard glanced at his handheld device. “Your access has been administratively suspended, sir.”

Julian stared, a cold wave washing over him. “Suspended? What are you talking about?”

“Pending an internal compliance review,” the second guard added, stepping closer. “Standard procedure, sir. We’ve been instructed to deny all access.”

“Compliance review?” Julian’s voice rose, a sharp edge of panic starting to break through his composure. “This is ridiculous! I’m Senior Vice President. I have a meeting with Marcus Finch this morning!”

The first guard merely gestured towards the exit. His face was impassive.

Julian stood frozen, his keycard clutched uselessly in his hand. The turnstiles remained locked, an impenetrable barrier to his carefully constructed empire.
