Chapter 18: Three Days Later

Julian, his face red with fury, stormed into the lobby coffee shop. He spotted Douglas Karr hunched over a laptop, his usually slicked-back hair disheveled.

Karr’s eyes were darting nervously around the room. He looked as though he hadn’t slept in days.

Julian slammed his hand on the table. “Douglas! What the hell is going on? My card’s suspended! They said ‘compliance review’!”

Karr flinched, nearly knocking over his coffee cup. He slowly raised his head, his face pale beneath a sheen of sweat.

“Julian,” Karr whispered, his voice hoarse. “It’s… it’s bad.”

“Bad? What’s bad?” Julian hissed, leaning in closer. “Is this about the Varga facility? Did they find something?”

Karr wrung his hands. “An automated regulatory flag. From the county clerk’s office. Forty-eight hours ago.”

Julian stared, a cold knot forming in his stomach. “The county clerk’s office? Why would they flag anything?”

“The… the credit facility,” Karr stammered, avoiding Julian’s gaze. “The $2.5 million for Varga Holdings. It’s frozen. Locked down completely.”

Julian felt the blood drain from his face. “Frozen? How? Why?”

“They’re saying… unauthorized encumbrance,” Karr mumbled. “And now the bank auditors are here. They’re going through everything. Every single expense report, every notarized filing from the last three years.”

Julian reeled back. Three years? His carefully crafted shell entities, his executive draws for Elena’s lavish lifestyle—all of it was about to be exposed.

“Who… who would have filed something with the county clerk?” Julian asked, his voice barely a whisper. His mind raced, trying to find a scapegoat.

Karr just shook his head, burying his face in his hands. “I don’t know, Julian. But they have everything. They even asked about… about the landscape design fees.”

Landscape design fees. The coded payments for Karr’s silence. The payments from his and Claire’s joint account.

A dawning horror settled over Julian. Someone knew. And they had been devastatingly precise.
