Chapter 18: Three Days Later

The emergency summons arrived in Julian’s inbox later that day. A terse, formal email from Marcus Finch, the Managing Partner of Apex Advisory.

“Urgent Executive Board Meeting. Tomorrow, 10 AM. Boardroom A.”

Julian’s initial panic from Karr’s confession had subsided, replaced by a familiar surge of arrogance. He was Julian Garrick. He always talked his way out of things.

He believed this was a simple misunderstanding. A personal marital dispute that had inconveniently spilled into corporate channels.

He started rehearsing his speech in his head. It wasn’t a legal defense. It was a performance.

He would paint Claire as unhinged, unstable. “My wife, Claire,” he’d begin, lowering his voice for effect. “Has unfortunately been struggling with documented mental instability for some time.”

He planned to nod gravely, implying a long, tragic battle.

Then, he’d pivot to the paperwork. “In a fit of jealousy,” he would explain, “she must have accessed my private office and stolen my notary stamp. Using it, she then proceeded to fabricate these baseless filings against Apex Advisory.”

He practiced the indignant tone. “A bitter spouse, I’m afraid, attempting to ruin my reputation.”

He would mention the whispers he’d already planted amongst their friends and colleagues. The “early-onset dementia.” The “erratic paranoia.”

They wouldn’t believe anything Claire said. Not when he had spent months building his narrative.

He combed his hair, adjusted his tie in the mirror. He was ready.

He felt a surge of triumph. Claire had tried to hurt him, but she had only given him another opportunity to prove his mastery.

He looked forward to seeing the pity in Marcus Finch’s eyes. And the quiet admiration.
