Chief Rayburn’s fingers closed around the wadded paper I’d slipped him, a flicker of surprise crossing his face, quickly masked. He looked down at his hand for a fraction of a second, then back up at the furious scene unfolding before him. The sudden weight in his palm was unexpected, alien.

“What’s going on here?” Rayburn demanded, his voice cutting through the tension, addressing Julian directly.

Julian, still livid from my revelation, turned his fury on the security chief. “Stay out of this, Rayburn. This is a police matter now. This old witch just confessed to blackmail.”

Victoria, recovering her composure, though still visibly shaken, pointed a trembling finger at me. “She knows about… she has something linking Julian to… Get it from her, Rayburn! Search her!”

Gaines, who had been about to seize my phone, paused, his hand hovering. He looked at Julian for confirmation, then at Rayburn, clearly annoyed by the interruption.

Rayburn, however, didn’t move towards me. He stood his ground, a barrier between Gaines and me. His gaze was steady, unwavering, holding Julian’s furious stare.

“I need to know what’s happening, Mr. Beauchamp,” Rayburn stated, his tone firm. “My staff and I are responsible for all incidents on this estate. And forced searches of staff are not standard procedure.”

Julian’s face darkened further. “I’m giving you a direct order, Chief! Search her now! She just admitted to extortion!”

“Extortion for what, Julian?” I shot back, my eyes fixed on Rayburn. “For bringing light to a hit-and-run? For covering up the death of an innocent person?”

The word “death” hung in the air, a chilling bell in the opulent dining room. Victoria pressed a hand to her mouth, her eyes wide with fear, not for me, but for the damage I could inflict.

Rayburn’s jaw tightened. He glanced down at his hand again, a subtle shift in his posture betraying the turmoil beneath his professional exterior. He knew I wouldn’t just hand him a piece of paper for no reason. He’d worked for the Beauchamps for years, seen their casual cruelty, but this was different.

“Deputy Chief Gaines is here,” Rayburn said, addressing Julian, trying to maintain some semblance of protocol. “If there’s an arrest, he handles it. I handle the security of the property.”

It was a standoff. Rayburn was refusing to comply with Julian’s direct, illegal order to search me, implicitly challenging Julian’s authority, and giving me a sliver of space to breathe.

“We have a signed document. The property will be ours by morning,” Julian snarled, frustrated by Rayburn’s defiance. He turned to Gaines. “Deputy Chief, just take her. She’s resisting arrest.”

Gaines took a step forward, his hand moving to my elbow. This was it. I had to push further. Rayburn was hesitant, but he was still on the fence. He needed more.

“Chief Rayburn,” I said loudly, clearly, making sure Victoria and Julian heard me. “Before Gaines destroys all the evidence, you need to check the hidden compartment in Julian’s private study. The one behind the third book on the top shelf, where he keeps his… trophies.”

A fresh wave of shock washed over Victoria. Julian’s eyes widened, a rare moment of genuine fear flashing in them. Gaines paused, his hand still on my arm, glancing between me, Julian, and Rayburn. The tension became unbearable, a coiled spring ready to snap.
