The ballroom erupted into a frenzy. Guests shrieked, others shouted for order, and a few brave souls began openly booing Victoria and Julian on stage. The “Philanthropists of the Year” banner hanging behind them now seemed a cruel, ironic joke.

From the control booth, I saw two figures in Georgia State Patrol uniforms, their broad-brimmed hats visible above the crowd, standing by the main doors. I raised my hand and gave them a swift, decisive signal. A nod I’d rehearsed with Rayburn on the way here.

They nodded back.

In a flash, the two state troopers moved. They weren’t just security details anymore. They were law enforcement, acting on information. With practiced precision, they marched onto the gala floor, their presence immediately commanding attention. Two more troopers appeared, blocking the ballroom’s side exits.

The crowd parted as they moved, their eyes fixed on the stage. Victoria let out a choked cry. Julian tried to step back, to melt into the backdrop, but the stage was brightly lit, and there was nowhere to hide.

“Deputy Chief Gaines!” one of the troopers boomed, his voice resonating even without a microphone. “You are under arrest for bribery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to cover up a felony!”

Deputy Chief Gaines, who had somehow managed to sneak into the back of the ballroom, hoping to disappear, froze. He looked around wildly, then made a desperate dash for a service exit. But the other troopers were already there. They tackled him to the ground, the sound of his flailing body echoing through the now-silent room.

His hands were cuffed behind his back, live on local television network broadcasts.

Then, the lead trooper turned his attention to the stage. “Julian Beauchamp! You are under arrest for vehicular manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and bribery!”

Julian stared, his face a mask of disbelief and horror. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Two more troopers ascended the stage. Victoria let out a keening wail as they moved towards her son.

Julian tried to resist, but the troopers were firm. They grabbed his arms, twisted them behind his back, and the metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the now-hushed ballroom.

He thrashed for a moment, yelling “You can’t do this! My mother will sue you all!” but it was futile. They escorted him off the stage, past the shocked faces of Atlanta’s elite, past the flashing cameras that captured every moment of his public downfall.

Victoria was left alone on stage, trembling, her perfect makeup running in streaks down her face. The award she was meant to receive lay forgotten on the podium. Her dynasty, built on money and power, was crumbling before her eyes.

Rayburn, still in the control booth, gave me a grim nod. The initial objective was complete. Julian was apprehended. Gaines was apprehended. But this was just the beginning. The Beauchamp empire was vast, and Victoria still wielded considerable influence. We needed to ensure this wasn’t just a temporary setback for them.

“This is not enough,” I said, my voice tight. “She needs to be held accountable. Every penny they have, every dirty secret.”

I watched Victoria on the screen, a solitary, broken figure. This was a war, and we had just won a major battle. But the fight wasn’t over until the entire Beauchamp network, founded on corruption and abuse, was systematically dismantled.
