Darius Washington stepped forward, taking the opportunity while Trevor was still reeling from the news. He produced another set of documents from his binder.

“While you digest that, Trevor,” Darius said, his voice devoid of sympathy, “we also need to discuss Maya’s intellectual property.”

Trevor visibly stiffened. He loved Maya’s music catalog. Not for its artistic merit, but for the steady stream of revenue it generated. As her husband, he held significant power of attorney over it.

“These are documents to sever your legal control over Maya’s music catalog, publishing rights, and any future earnings,” Darius explained, holding them out. “It’s a standard clause in the event of spousal misconduct impacting assets.”

Trevor stared at the papers. His eyes, which had been fixed on the distant wall, now focused sharply on the legalese. This wasn’t just about his career; this was about a significant portion of his wealth, the very thing he’d prioritized over his family.

“You can’t do that,” Trevor finally managed, his voice hoarse. “That’s her work. My wife’s work.”

“Indeed, it is her work,” I replied, stepping in. “And she deserves to have control over it, especially now. Especially given your… recent performance as a husband and partner.”

“I signed those papers with her,” Trevor protested, a flicker of his old arrogance returning. “She gave me that authority.”

“And that authority can be rescinded,” Darius countered, “particularly when you’ve demonstrated such a blatant disregard for her well-being and financial interests by diverting funds for personal use.”

He pointed to a specific paragraph in the document. “The language is clear. Your actions constitute a breach of fiduciary duty and, frankly, a profound act of spousal abandonment during a medical crisis.”

Trevor grabbed the papers, scanning them furiously. He saw the official seals, the legal language. There was no wiggle room.

He crumpled the documents in his hand, his face twisting. “This is insane!” he yelled, his voice cracking. “I’m her husband! I’m the father of her children!”

He slumped back in the chair, running his hands over his face. His voice dropped, losing its aggressive edge, replaced by a desperate, pleading tone.

“I… I was overwhelmed,” he mumbled, looking up, his eyes glassy. “The pressure, you know? Impending fatherhood. A-and the twins… it was just so much. I didn’t know how to handle it.”

He looked around the room, trying to garner some sympathy. “I just needed a break. I just needed to clear my head. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

His voice sounded like a child’s, small and broken. The man who had mocked his wife’s pain and spent lavishly was gone, replaced by a shell. It was a pathetic sight, but my heart remained hard.
