Chapter 17: Three Days Later – newsusdaily.com

The intercepted conversation changed everything. Julian wasn’t just leveraging my property; he was planning to compromise it with illegal offshore server farms to hide financial fraud.

My immediate priority shifted from defending my land to protecting its integrity and, more importantly, protecting Clara from the fallout. But first, she needed to understand what her husband truly was.

From my mobile unit, I saw Clara emerge from Julian’s lead vehicle. Her movements were hesitant, her shoulders slumped. She walked slowly toward the locked gate, where Julian was still pacing and speaking on a satellite phone.

He ended the call as she approached, turning to her with a forced smile. But the tension in his posture, the slight tremor in his hand, gave him away.

“Julian,” Clara said, her voice strained, “I heard about the conservatorship papers. Did you… did you tell the court that Dad has dementia?”

Julian’s eyes flickered, and he stumbled over his words. “No, no, darling, not exactly. It was just a technicality, you know? A way to streamline things. To protect Dad’s interests.”

“Protect his interests?” Clara’s voice rose, a tremor of anger beneath the surface. “He’s a United States Congressman, Julian! He’s sharper than anyone I know. You told them he was mentally unfit?”

Julian put a hand on her arm, attempting to soothe her. “It’s standard procedure for asset transfers. Just a formality. It’s what our lawyers advised. You signed the initial consent, remember?”

Clara pulled her arm away. “I signed a general power of attorney, Julian. You told me it was ‘for future logistical ease’ with the PAC. You never said anything about declaring my own father mentally incompetent!”

Her face was etched with a mixture of disbelief and dawning horror. She looked at him, truly looked at him, perhaps for the first time. The casual dismissiveness in his voice, the way he brushed off her concerns, painted a clear picture.

“I need you to sign these additional affidavits for the injunction,” Julian pressed, trying to steer the conversation. He pulled a fresh stack of papers from his briefcase. “They’re crucial for the state enforcement to proceed.”

Clara took a step back, her head shaking slowly. “No. I won’t sign anything else, Julian. Not until I speak with Dad. Not until I understand what you’ve really done.”

Her refusal, delivered with a quiet but firm resolve, visibly deflated Julian. His legal position, already shaky with the forged signature, crumbled further without her full cooperation.

He tried to argue, to cajole, but Clara simply turned and walked away, heading back towards the safety of her children in the lead SUV. Her loyalty to him, for the first time, was broken.
