Chapter 17: Three Days Later – newsusdaily.com

Julian stood frozen, staring at the letter through the security window, his entire world crashing down around him. The storm, however, was not finished delivering its own brand of justice.

The torrential rain, relentless for hours, had saturated the upper canyon walls. The ground, already weakened by days of precipitation, could no longer hold.

A low, rumbling groan started from above, growing steadily louder. It was a deep, guttural sound, unlike any thunder.

Suddenly, a massive section of the canyon wall gave way. Earth, rock, and uprooted trees cascaded downward in a violent, unstoppable wave.

“Mudslide!” Douglas Carver’s voice erupted over the comms, laced with raw urgency. “Massive slide on the lower canyon road! It’s blocking the main access route!”

Through the storm-lashed windows of the basement, I watched in stunned silence. The deluge of mud and debris flowed like a slow-motion catastrophe, completely engulfing the winding road below.

Boulders the size of small cars bounced and rolled, smashing against the remaining trees. The roar was immense, deafening.

Julian’s convoy, parked along the narrow valley road below the main lodge access, was now completely cut off. The mudslide had sealed off the only way in or out.

His three high-tech vehicles, his entire command center, were physically trapped. With no phone service, no power, and the road utterly impassable, he and his team were stranded.

Julian spun around from the window, his eyes wide with a new kind of panic. This wasn’t a legal battle or a tactical standoff anymore. This was a survival situation.

The blue lights of Sheriff Callahan’s vehicles, which had been waiting at a respectful distance down the road, now flickered weakly from behind a wall of mud and shattered timber. They were just as trapped, unable to get to us, unable to leave.

The Blue Ridge had become a cage, and everyone within it was now at the mercy of the mountain.

While I was at the Capitol finalizing my congressional committee report, my son-in-law Julian moved his entire staff, my daughter, and my grandchildren toward my mountain retreat in the Blue Ridge...
