Chapter 17: Three Days Later – newsusdaily.com

With Clara’s handover of the ledger, Julian’s entire scheme collapsed. The confession from his father, coupled with the detailed financial records, painted a damning picture.

The mudslide, while terrifying, had also created a unique opportunity. It trapped Julian, but it also stalled any immediate state troop deployment, giving me a small window to secure the evidence.

My secure line to the District Attorney, established through a battery-powered satellite phone, crackled to life. “We have the evidence, Mr. District Attorney,” I said, my voice cutting through the remaining static. “A handwritten confession and a full financial ledger detailing campaign finance fraud.”

“Can you get it out?” the DA asked, his voice urgent.

“The mudslide,” I explained. “Roads are impassable for vehicles. But Sheriff Callahan’s men are clearing a foot path. We’ll need a courier.”

Hours later, the rain finally began to subside, leaving a thick, eerie fog hanging over the Blue Ridge peaks. The path through the mudslide, though still treacherous, was now passable on foot.

A lone figure, an emergency courier dispatched by the DA’s office, picked his way through the debris, a waterproof satchel strapped to his back.

I met him at the edge of the cleared path, the air thick with the smell of wet earth and pine. Douglas Carver stood beside me, rifle at the ready.

Julian, seeing the courier approach, emerged from his lead vehicle, his eyes wild. He must have realized his time was up.

I handed the yellowed confession letter and Julian’s black leather financial ledger to the courier. “Deliver these directly to the District Attorney,” I instructed, my voice firm. “No detours.”

The courier nodded, securing the satchel. He turned and began his careful trek down the muddy path.

Julian watched him go, a primal scream caught in his throat. His entire body sagged, then, with a surge of desperate energy, he sprinted back to the trunk of his lead SUV.

He ripped it open, grabbed a secondary black briefcase—sleek, utilitarian, and clearly meant for quick escape—and slammed the trunk shut.

Without a backward glance, he turned and plunged into the thick, dark Blue Ridge wilderness, swallowed by the fog and the ancient trees.

Douglas raised his rifle, but I shook my head. “Let him go. For now.”

The evidence was out. Julian was on the run. The storm was over, but the true crisis was just beginning.

While I was at the Capitol finalizing my congressional committee report, my son-in-law Julian moved his entire staff, my daughter, and my grandchildren toward my mountain retreat in the Blue Ridge...
