The complete power outage plunged the mountain into chaos. Julian’s sophisticated equipment, his digital locks, his entire tech-reliant strategy, were now useless.
Rain lashed down, reducing visibility to almost zero. In the blinding flashes of lightning, I could see Julian’s team attempting to salvage what they could.
Julian himself, surprisingly agile in the sudden crisis, sprinted toward the main lodge. He was heading for the generator shed, a separate outbuilding designed to provide backup power to the entire compound.
He probably assumed it would be an easy manual override, a simple flip of a switch, to restore power to his equipment and, crucially, to the lodge’s digital security systems.
What he didn’t know was that I had personally designed the security for that shed after a close call years ago.
From my secondary cabin, using a military-grade night vision monocular, I watched Julian reach the shed. He yanked on the main service door. It held firm, locked tight.
He pulled again, harder, his grunts audible even over the storm’s roar. Nothing.
He then tried a small side access panel, presumably where a manual override key might be. That too, remained unyielding.
My design featured not just digital locks, but secondary mechanical deadbolts, each one individually crafted and custom-fitted. They were meant to withstand any attempts to bypass the primary electronic systems, especially in a grid-down scenario.
Julian slammed his fist against the shed door in frustration. He was shouting at his team, but the wind tore his words away.
He then tried to smash the small window, presumably to reach an interior latch. The glass, reinforced with polycarbonate, merely flexed under the impact.
His frantic efforts only served to emphasize his ignorance of the lodge’s true defensive layers. He was used to hacking digital systems, bypassing software. He was completely unprepared for the brute force of mechanical engineering.
His team pulled out crowbars and axes, desperately trying to pry open the heavy, steel-reinforced door. Sparks flew from their futile attempts.
They were stranded. Their sophisticated PAC equipment, their high-tech servers, all lay dormant in the dark vehicles, useless without power. And the key to their revival was secured by a system Julian hadn’t even known existed.
