Chapter 17: Three Days Later – newsusdaily.com

Inside the mobile command unit, the air hummed with the low thrum of Arthur’s specialized equipment. Rain lashed against the armored windows, but the digital display glowed steady and green.

My fingers danced across the console, tuning the RF telemetry receiver. Julian’s signal, raw and unencrypted, was a beacon against the static of the Blue Ridge night.

It wasn’t long before I pinpointed the exact frequency of his cell phone. A recorded snippet, clear as day, played through my earpiece.

“Just use Clara’s name,” Julian’s voice, crisp and arrogant, filled my ears. “She’ll be fine with it later. The court just needs a signature on the conservatorship motion, and we’re out of time.”

A cold knot tightened in my stomach. He had forged my daughter’s consent.

I replayed the recording, isolating his voice, amplifying the damning words. Then, I patched it through to the main gate’s external intercom system.

A crackle sounded through the speaker outside, audible to everyone.

“Julian,” my voice boomed, calm but firm, cutting through the murmurs at the gate. “Do you recognize this?”

The recorded snippet of Julian’s voice echoed across the quiet mountain night: “Just use Clara’s name. She’ll be fine with it later. The court just needs a signature on the conservatorship motion, and we’re out of time.”

A stunned silence fell over the convoy. Julian, who had been confidently explaining something to Sheriff Callahan, froze mid-sentence.

His face, visible on my external monitors, went slack. His eyes darted around, searching for a source.

Sheriff Callahan, who had been holding the conservatorship papers, slowly lowered them. He looked at Julian, then back at the gate, a deep crease forming between his brows.

“Sheriff,” I continued, “that’s my son-in-law, Julian Albright, admitting to forging my daughter’s signature on federal court documents.”

Julian’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He staggered a step backward, his previous bravado entirely gone.

Sheriff Callahan’s hand went to his radio, but he didn’t transmit. He just held it, his gaze fixed on Julian.

“This is now a matter for federal investigators, not county enforcement,” I stated clearly over the intercom. “I suggest you verify the authenticity of those documents before proceeding, Sheriff.”

The Sheriff slowly nodded, his eyes never leaving Julian. The emergency conservatorship order now felt like a very heavy, very illegal piece of paper in his hand.

While I was at the Capitol finalizing my congressional committee report, my son-in-law Julian moved his entire staff, my daughter, and my grandchildren toward my mountain retreat in the Blue Ridge...
