Her Son Tried to Seize Her Home in the Cult's Council — Until Her "Low-Level Accountant" Past Unraveled His Lies
A few days later, a small knock at my door startled me from my intense focus on my reconstructed ledger. It was Leo, my grandson, Daniel and Vanessa’s son. His bright, innocent face was a welcome relief, a momentary reprieve from the bitterness consuming me. He held a well-loved communal coloring book and a handful of crayons, his usual offering of companionship.
“Grandmother Eleanor,” he chirped, his eyes wide. “Mommy said I could visit for a little while.”
A pang of conflicting emotions shot through me. I loved Leo deeply, but his presence was a painful reminder of his parents’ betrayal. I forced a smile.
“Come in, little sprout,” I said, using my old nickname for him. “What wondrous creations are you bringing today?”
He settled onto the floor, immediately flipping open his book and beginning to scribble. I offered him a glass of water and a piece of fruit, watching him quietly. His innocence was a stark contrast to the deceit swirling around his parents. He was a pure, unfiltered joy.
After a few minutes, he looked up, holding out his book.
“Look, Grandmother,” he said proudly. “Secret numbers!”
My gaze fell upon his drawing. It was a chaotic swirl of colors, but amidst the scribbles, I could clearly see small, irregular clusters of numbers, written in a child’s hand. They looked like random figures, scattered across the page.
“Secret numbers, you say?” I asked, trying to keep my voice casual, a strange prickle of intuition sparking within me. “Where did you learn about secret numbers, Leo?”
He shrugged, completely unburdened by any hidden meaning.
“Mommy has a secret numbers book!” he declared, his eyes bright with the excitement of sharing a secret. “She keeps it hidden from Daddy sometimes. She says they’re special numbers.”
My heart stopped. The blood drained from my face, a cold wave washing over me. “Mommy’s secret numbers book.” The words echoed in my mind, loud and clear. It was too specific, too precise, to be anything else.
“She keeps it hidden from Daddy sometimes,” he had said. That detail confirmed it. Vanessa had not only found, but was actively concealing, my old forensic notes and personal ledgers. The ones Agnes had said she was “tidying up.” The ones that contained the actual evidence of my past brilliance, the techniques, the specific cases I had worked on, the methods for uncovering fraud. She hadn’t thrown them away; she was keeping them. And hiding them.
“Oh, does she now?” I managed, my voice sounding distant even to my own ears. I forced a smile, my hands trembling slightly as I picked up his drawing, pretending to admire the colors. “And what kind of numbers are they?”
Leo just shrugged again, happily drawing more random numbers.
“Just numbers, Grandmother,” he said, then added, “But Mommy looks at them a lot. And she tells me not to tell Daddy.”
The innocent words hammered home the weight of the realization. Vanessa wasn’t just discrediting my past; she was actively using it, studying it perhaps, to understand my methods, to better counter me. Or worse, to integrate my own techniques into their deception. She was using my brilliance against me. My own grandson, unknowingly, had just delivered a devastating blow, confirming Vanessa’s calculated treachery.
A profound sadness settled over me, mingling with a renewed surge of anger. The pain of my son’s betrayal was one thing, but to see Vanessa manipulate even their child, using him as an unwitting tool to hide her deception, was another level of cruelty. She was hiding my work, turning my professional past into a weapon she held.
“They are lovely numbers, Leo,” I said, my voice thick with emotion I struggled to suppress. “Very special indeed.”
My mind raced. Vanessa had found my most valuable asset, the very proof of my true capabilities, and was holding it captive. A direct confrontation would only lead to further denial. I needed a different approach. I needed to bait her, to make her reveal the ledgers herself. Leo’s innocent slip had confirmed the extent of her cunning, and now, I had to be even more cunning in return. The truth was not just hidden; it was actively being concealed by the very people who sought to destroy me.
