The main concourse of Atlanta Memorial Hospital was usually a place of hurried footsteps and hushed conversations. Tonight, it buzzed with a different kind of energy. Marcus Brody had chosen a prominent spot near the main entrance, his camera pointed at a small table where Malcolm’s letter lay open. Elijah stood next to him, his presence calm but resolute. I sat beside them, a fragile shield for Sophie, who was thankfully asleep in my room with Nurse Tasha watching her.

“Welcome, Atlanta,” Marcus began, his voice clear and resonant as the red “LIVE” indicator glowed on his camera. “Tonight, we’re bringing you a story of predatory opportunism right here, in the heart of our city’s healthcare system.”

He held up Malcolm’s letter, carefully displaying the date and signature. “This is a letter from a deceased husband, Malcolm Washington, to his grieving widow, Emily. It exposes Derrick Gaines, a man who has attempted to defraud this family for years.”

My phone, clutched in my hand, showed Marcus’s live stream. The viewer count climbed steadily: 500, 1,200, then 2,000. It kept rising. Comments scrolled past, a blur of outrage and support.

Just as Marcus was detailing Derrick’s past embezzlement attempts, a commotion erupted near the entrance. Derrick Gaines strode in, flanked by a uniformed hospital administrator and a stern-faced man in a suit carrying a briefcase. It was 8:15 PM, precisely when his emergency court order was set to be enforced.

Derrick’s eyes, sharp and triumphant, scanned the concourse. He saw me, then Marcus’s camera, then the laptop screen displaying the live stream. His confident smirk faltered, replaced by a look of bewildered horror.

“What is this?” he hissed, his voice cracking.

The man in the suit, presumably Derrick’s attorney, pulled out his phone. He stared at the live stream, his jaw dropping as he watched Marcus point to the specific lines in Malcolm’s letter detailing Derrick’s past fraud and the restraining order.

“Mr. Gaines, what is the meaning of this?” the attorney demanded, his voice suddenly cold. He was clearly watching his career unravel in real-time.

“This is a smear campaign!” Derrick shouted, his face contorting. He lunged towards the table, as if to snatch the letter. Elijah stepped forward, blocking him, his hand firmly on Derrick’s chest.

“Mr. Gaines,” Elijah said, his voice low and dangerous. “Do not touch Mrs. Washington or her property.”

Suddenly, the attorney’s phone rang. He put it on speaker, his face pale. A disembodied voice boomed through the concourse, amplified by the live stream’s microphone.

“—I am withdrawing my representation immediately. This is a clear breach of professional ethics and an unforgivable deception. I cannot, and will not, be associated with this kind of fraud.”

It was Derrick’s attorney’s firm, abandoning him live on air. The courtroom representative, who had been standing next to Derrick, visibly stiffened, stepping back a full pace.

The live viewer count now read 2,400, climbing even higher. The comments section exploded with cries of “Fraudster!” and “Justice for Emily!”

Derrick stared at his attorney, then at the hospital administrator, who now looked furious. The light of triumph in his eyes had been extinguished, replaced by raw panic. His legal trap had not only collapsed, it had become his public execution.
