While In The Hospital Grieving My Husband, A Stranger Tried To Declare Me Incompetent To Seize My Daughter — Until An Old Letter Uncovered His Secret
The room still carried the faint, antiseptic smell of the hospital, but a new presence filled it now. Dr. Elijah Crawford stood at the foot of my bed, a clipboard in his hand. His gaze was steady, not pitying, as he looked at me.
Derrick Gaines, who had been loudly arguing with a nurse in the hallway, pushed past Nurse Tasha Jenkins and stormed into my room.
“She is not to have visitors,” Derrick declared, pointing a finger at Elijah. “Especially not one influencing her. I’ve filed for a psychiatric hold.”
Nurse Tasha, a woman whose patience seemed endless but whose eyes held a steel edge, stepped forward. “Mr. Gaines, you are not authorized to restrict visitor privileges. This is Dr. Crawford, her physician.”
Elijah simply raised an eyebrow. He did not even turn to look at Derrick directly.
“Mrs. Washington’s charts show severe exhaustion and grief, which is entirely consistent with the recent loss of her husband,” Elijah stated calmly, his voice a low rumble. He flipped a page on his clipboard.
“There is absolutely no medical basis for a psychiatric evaluation, nor any indication she is unfit to make her own decisions.”
Derrick’s face twisted. “She’s unstable! She’s incoherent! I demand a full psychological assessment immediately. The court needs to know.”
He jabbed a finger towards me, his eyes wide with a frantic intensity.
I recoiled slightly, pulling the thin hospital blanket tighter around me. The accusation, even from him, stung. Was I truly so broken? My heart hammered, a frantic drum against my ribs.
Elijah finally turned, his posture unyielding. “Mr. Gaines, I understand you have certain… legal interests regarding Mrs. Washington’s family matters.” His tone was polite but firm.
“However, medical decisions in this hospital are made by medical professionals, based on medical facts.”
He tapped the clipboard with his pen. “And the facts here are clear. Mrs. Washington is grieving, not incompetent. Any attempts to impose an unwarranted psychiatric hold will be met with a formal complaint.”
Derrick spluttered, his mouth opening and closing. He looked from Elijah to Nurse Tasha, then back to Elijah, as if searching for an ally. Finding none, his shoulders slumped.
“This isn’t over,” he muttered, glaring at me one last time.
He spun on his heel and stalked out, the door hissing shut behind him.
A long breath I hadn’t realized I was holding finally escaped me. My hands, still trembling, clutched the blanket.
Elijah watched him go, then turned his full attention back to me. “Emily,” he said, his voice softer now. “Are you alright?”
I could only nod, a lump in my throat. His presence, his unwavering support, felt like a solid wall against the chaos that had been swirling around me.
“Please,” I managed to whisper. “Don’t let him take Sophie.”
Elijah stepped closer, a reassuring hand gently touching my arm. “I won’t,” he promised, his eyes serious. “I’ll do everything in my power to ensure you and Sophie are protected.”
His touch was brief, professional, yet it sent a jolt of warmth through me, a tiny flicker of hope in the overwhelming darkness.
