The concourse was slowly returning to normal, the police taking statements, Marcus Brody finishing his live stream. Nurse Tasha Jenkins arrived at my side, a small smile gracing her lips.

“Dr. Crawford,” she said, nodding to Elijah. “Mrs. Washington’s full discharge papers are ready. We want to get her out of here and home as soon as possible.”

A wave of exhaustion, deep and bone-weary, washed over me. The adrenaline from the confrontation was fading, leaving me depleted. But the thought of going home, to my own bed, was a balm.

Brenda approached us hesitantly, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen. She looked small, diminished. Her gaze found mine, and she wrung her hands.

“Emily,” she began, her voice a raw whisper, thick with unshed tears. “I am so sorry.”

Her face crumpled, and she pressed a hand to her mouth, stifling a sob. “He… he tricked me. He preyed on my grief. I was so angry, so lost after Malcolm…”

She trailed off, unable to articulate the depth of her shame and sorrow.

I looked at her, seeing not the bitter mother-in-law who had tried to take Sophie, but a grieving woman who had been cruelly manipulated. The anger I had held onto for so long began to soften, replaced by a deep sadness for both of us.

“I know, Brenda,” I said, my voice quiet. “I know.”

It wasn’t forgiveness, not yet, but it was an understanding, a tentative peace in the wreckage of our shared loss.

Brenda nodded, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “The police… they want me to cooperate. Tell them everything about Derrick, about the money.”

“Yes,” I urged gently. “Please do. It’s important.”

She nodded again, a flicker of resolve in her tear-filled eyes. “I will. For Malcolm. For Sophie.” She glanced briefly at Elijah, then turned and walked towards the waiting police officers.

Elijah’s hand found my elbow, a light, supportive touch. “Come on,” he said softly. “Let’s get you home.”

He had already arranged for a hospital car to take us. Sophie, still peacefully asleep, was carried out by Nurse Tasha, carefully bundled in a blanket. Watching her little face, so innocent and unaware of the storm she had just weathered, my resolve solidified. She was safe. That was all that truly mattered.

As we drove away from the hospital, the city lights blurring past, Elijah sat beside me. He didn’t speak, just offered a quiet, comforting presence. The scent of antiseptics, the harsh lights, the constant fear — it all receded with every mile. I leaned my head back, closing my eyes, feeling Sophie’s warm, soft weight in my arms. We were going home.
