Elijah returned later that afternoon, his face etched with concern after Brenda’s visit. I told him everything, about the letter, about Derrick’s threats to Brenda, about the $50,000 already siphoned from Malcolm’s account. He listened intently, his jaw tightening.

“He’s a classic predator,” Elijah said, running a hand through his dark hair. “He thrives in the shadows, preying on vulnerability.”

“But what do we do?” I asked, frustration bubbling up. “Brenda is terrified. She won’t speak up. The hospital is still under his pressure.”

Elijah paced the small room, his gaze thoughtful. “We take him out of the shadows,” he declared, stopping abruptly. “We expose him where he can’t hide.”

He looked at me, a determined glint in his eyes. “I know a journalist. Marcus Brody. He runs an independent digital news channel here in Atlanta. He specializes in exposing fraud, especially probate predation.”

My heart leaped. “A journalist? In here?” The idea was audacious, risky.

“Exactly,” Elijah confirmed. “This hospital prides itself on patient advocacy. If a public spectacle forces their hand, they will protect their reputation.”

Within an hour, Marcus Brody arrived. He was a lean man with sharp, intelligent eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor. He carried a small, professional camera rig and a laptop. He listened to my story, his expression unreadable, occasionally nodding.

“So, a family grieving, a predatory lawyer, an unsuspecting mother-in-law, and a hidden letter from the deceased revealing a history of fraud,” Marcus summarized, his voice flat. “It’s got potential. But we need hard evidence. And we need to make it undeniable.”

I handed him Malcolm’s letter. He read it carefully, his eyebrows rising slightly. “This is it,” he murmured. “This is the smoking gun.”

“We’ll do a live broadcast,” Elijah suggested. “Right in the main concourse. It’s public access, hard for them to shut down without looking guilty.”

My stomach fluttered. Live? This was terrifying. My grief, my vulnerability, would be broadcast to strangers.

“Are you ready for this, Emily?” Marcus asked, his gaze direct. “Once we go live, there’s no going back. Derrick will see it. The hospital will see it. Everyone will see it.”

I thought of Sophie, her tear-filled eyes, her whispers in the dark. I thought of Malcolm’s warning, his protective love. My fear, suddenly, felt smaller than my resolve.

“Yes,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “I’m ready. I have to be.”

Marcus nodded. He started setting up his equipment, a small camera on a tripod, a microphone, and his laptop humming quietly. Elijah stayed by my side, a reassuring presence.

“We’ll go live at 8:00 PM,” Marcus announced, checking his watch. “Peak local viewership. I’ll send out alerts to my network, get the word out. We’re aiming for at least 2,000 local viewers to make this count.”

The concourse below, usually a bustling thoroughfare, would soon become a public stage. The clock on the wall ticked steadily towards 8:00 PM. I took a deep, shaky breath. The fight was about to become very, very public.
