The concourse erupted in a cacophony of sound. People who had been watching the live stream on their phones were now shouting, pointing at Derrick. The hospital administrator was barking into a walkie-talkie, his face a mask of furious embarrassment.

Derrick Gaines, stripped of his legal shield and facing a mob of angry onlookers, looked like a cornered animal. His eyes darted wildly. He was no longer the smug manipulator but a desperate man.

He saw the security guards rushing towards him from both ends of the concourse. He knew his time was up.

With a sudden, violent lurch, Derrick pushed past the court representative, who stumbled backward, spilling papers everywhere. Derrick didn’t pause. He made a bee-line for the small table where his own briefcase lay, next to the half-signed corporate filings he’d brought with him.

He snatched the briefcase, almost knocking Marcus’s camera off its tripod. Papers scattered across the polished floor.

“Stop him!” someone yelled.

Elijah lunged, but Derrick was too fast, fueled by adrenaline and a primal urge to escape. He dodged around a family pushing a wheelchair, weaving through the chaos he’d created.

He glanced back at me, his face a mask of pure hatred. “You haven’t won anything, Emily!” he shrieked, his voice raw.

Then, he was gone, disappearing through a discreet service exit typically used for staff and deliveries. A loud *thunk* echoed as the heavy door slammed shut behind him.

The hospital security guards, momentarily disoriented by the commotion, reached the service door seconds too late. They pounded on it, but it was locked from the other side.

The police arrived then, their sirens still faintly wailing from outside. Two officers, grim-faced, surveyed the chaotic scene. Marcus Brody, ever the professional, continued to film, narrating the events for his live audience.

“Derrick Gaines has fled the scene,” Marcus announced, his voice steady. “But not before being publicly exposed as a fraud.”

I stood there, shaking, watching the empty doorway where he’d vanished. My hands were balled into fists. He had escaped. The immediate threat, the guardianship petition, was gone. But Derrick himself was still out there.

A police officer, a stout woman with kind eyes, approached me. “Mrs. Washington? Are you alright?”

I could only nod. The relief was overwhelming, but it was mixed with a bitter taste. He had been so close, so triumphant, and then, just like that, he was gone, melting into the Atlanta night. He had left behind the scattered half-signed corporate filings, evidence of his scheme, but he had managed to slip away himself.

The immediate nightmare was over, but the full reckoning felt… incomplete.
